If you own a truck and want to be sure that the contents you store in the truck bed remain safe, one option is to purchase a tonneau cover. From there, you can make use of a tailgate locking assembly in order to lock it up tight, and ensure your contents stay secure. Your cover, which may also be called a truck bed cover, can be a hard or a soft top, as the tailgate locking assembly will work with both.

The locking assembly has a number of mechanical parts which work together to latch to your truck's tailgate handle. There is a cylinder that you place your key in, and turn it to either lock or unlock the mechanism. Sometimes this assembly starts to fail or stop working, which means you won't be able to lock up your possessions, or you may not be able to get it open. You may not want to attempt to replace the tailgate locking assembly on your own, as it can be difficult. Instead you can have a mechanic take a look and replace the tailgate locking assembly for you.

Here are a few common symptoms of a bad or failing tailgate locking assembly that you can be on the watch for:

1. Power lock doesn't work

If you have a power-operated tailgate locking system, then you should be able to push a button to lock/unlock it. If you push the button and nothing happens, it could be that the locking assembly isn’t working properly. Be sure the batteries in your remote are working before assuming it’s the locking assembly.

2. Tailgate lock doesn't latch

If you're able to "lock" the cylinder yet it doesn't latch, then there is likely an issue with the assembly. There's a good chance you'll need to replace it.

3. Tailgate lock cylinder won't turn

It may be that you place your key in the cylinder and you aren’t able to turn it so you can unlock/lock it. This is another sign that the tailgate locking assembly may need replacing.

Maintaining the Locking Assembly

It is recommended that in order to ensure your tailgate locking assembly stays in good working order, you clean and lubricate at the suggested service interval.

The tailgate locking assembly on your truck gives you a way to lock up your belongings, and ensure they stay safe at all times. Unfortunately, the locking assembly can start to fail over time, which does require replacement.

Ford Taurus - Brake Pads Replacement (Front) - Martinez, California
This young man was very professional and well informed. He checked out my vehicle and made some recommendations without being intrusive. He completed my service in short order and left the parking spot as neat and tidy as he found it. I really enjoyed the ability to be home and productive instead of waiting at a repair shop and wasting time.
Audi A6 Quattro - 75 Point Safety Inspection - Lafayette, California
This was my first time using Your Mechanic so, I was quite a bit skeptical. It took about an hour for Stefan to check out my car so, again, I am thinking he's probably finding a million things wrong and it's going to cost a fortune. Well, to my delight, he only found a couple of things - did not pressure me to let them do the work and even added I could wait a month or so to have the work done. After he left, I went online and my quote was waiting - I was astounded at the fair price I was quoted. I will definitely do business with them again and have ALREADY recommended to 2 friends of mine. VERY impressed!!

Dodge Challenger - Battery - Columbia, South Carolina
Showed up over an hour late and didn't call to let me know his new ETA. Didn't apologize for being late once he arrived. I tried to make pleasant small talk and he was not at all receptive. With that said he got my battery replaced and my car running in decent time. Was on a phone call in his car for 10 minutes. Did not apologize for being on the phone for so long during my service call, even though I let him know when he arrived that I would need to leave at a certain time for another appointment. He was more talkative after his phone call, but left me with only 7 minutes to get ready for my next appointment. Only took one star off because I don't rate for bedside manner.....he did the job well, I just wish he would have been more punctual and respectful of my time constraints caused by his lateness. I see he had mostly great reviews before me, maybe he was just having a bad day??
