What is the throttle valve cable all about?

The throttle valve cable is a key component of a transmission system. The throttle valve cable is responsible for maintaining proper shift feel, controlling line pressure, and both partial and full throttle downshifts. The throttle valve cable is connected to the throttle lever, and is responsible for controlling it. Regardless of how much torque your engine is generating, the throttle valve cable will be able to keep the shift feel and transmission line pressure in balance.

Keep in mind:

  • When the throttle valve cable is adjusted, the entire transmission system should be inspected.
  • Replacing the carburetor can sometimes make it impossible for the throttle valve cable to be properly adjusted.

Our recommendation:

Your transmission is one of the most important parts of your vehicle to service. During maintenance and tuneups every part of the suspension should be checked, including the throttle valve cable. Always follow your car’s suggested maintenance schedule for the transmission.

What are the common symptoms indicating you need to adjust the throttle valve cable?

  • Transmission (gear) does not shift properly

How important is this service?

The transmission is what is used to switch gears so that your vehicle runs smoothly and optimally. A key part of this system is the throttle lever, which keeps the shift feel and transmission line pressure in balance at all times. The throttle lever is controlled by the throttle valve cable. One of the key roles that the throttle lever and throttle valve cable play is that they’re responsible for downshifting your vehicle when it is going uphill. The throttle valve cable helps the engine find the right gear to maximize torque. When the throttle valve cable is not properly adjusted, a key component of the transmission is lost. Since the transmission is such a finely tuned machine, an unadjusted throttle valve cable can result in severe damage to the transmission.

David was amaziiing! I can't say enough. I was a little bit nervous as I never used this service before so I did not know how good my mechanic is. When I made it to my car David was already there waiting, he took me to the store to get the battery, fixed the problem and gave me good suggestions here and there on top of the service ! I would highly recommend him to anyone!

Volkswagen Jetta L5-2.5L - Oil Change - Phoenix, Arizona
This was my first experience with My Mechanic, and Steven represented the company well. He was timely, efficient and put us at ease. When I texted for a quote, the guy reported being from California and was very helpful and professional. He thoroughly explained the process and what to expect. I wasn't enthused about having to give my credit card number over the phone, but I suppose it is neccecary to avoid wasting time and gas for employee's if a customer flakes out. I was far less impressed with the office staff. I'd attempted to postpone the appointment, but was told there would be a late cancellation fee placed on my card. I believe $50. To avoid this, I had a friend wait at my house for the mechanic. I explained I'd be unreachable the following day and that my phone was being erratic about messages. I was assured someone would be here at the specified time. I'd explained I convinced a friend to sit at my house to meet the mechanic. She had things to do, however sat here for two hours, no one showed up. I called the following day to inquire as to what had happened and was not happy about the way the employee spoke to me. When I inquired as to why the mechanic hadn't shown up. I'm not difficult, and understand things come up. but she went straight into defensive, rude about having left a voicemail re. the mechanic not showing up. Ultimately, I ended up rescheduling. I am glad I did, as Steven was great. She'd been so indignant about the mandatory $50 fee when attempting to reschedule the dayvbefore, but I'm more concerned with the skill of a mechanic than whoever handles the phones. The rate was very fair and I will probably use Your Mechanic again.

Jeremy is very knowledgeable and experienced with Volkswagen cars, something that I was looking for. There may be an issue with the replaced ABS sensor or the coding may have been changed by Volkswagen. He is rescheduling a replacement of the sensor under their warranty. Jeremy is very thorough and an outstanding mechanic.
