What is the Cooling/Radiator Fan Motor all about?

Your vehicle's engine is constantly burning fuel and gets hot. The car’s cooling system is responsible for carrying heat away to the outside air. The cooling fan motor powers the cooling fan, which keeps the engine from overheating. The fan is located in the engine compartment, at the front or rear of the radiator. The fan cools the coolant as it passes through the radiator. The coolant flows through the entire engine and is responsible for absorbing the extra heat and thereby preventing the engine from overheating. The fan blows the air from the outside and passes it through the radiator. If the cooling fan motor and the fan stop working, the coolant will remain hot and cause the engine to overheat.

Cooling Fan Motor Service

Keep in mind:

  • When the cooling fan motor is replaced, the cooling fan blade should also be inspected.
  • Anytime that maintenance is performed on the cooling system, the fan motor should be inspected.

How it's done:

  • Scan the computer system for any diagnostic trouble codes.
  • Test fuses and relays.
  • Test for power and ground going to the fan.
  • Remove and replace the radiator fan motor.
  • Check for proper operation of fan.

  • The cooling fan motor is an electrical motor that resides in a high temperature environment. At some point over time, it may fail. If you notice that the engine is overheating (see the temperature gauge in the dashboard), and you do not hear the fan(s) working get the cooling system inspected immediately.
  • Your mechanic should check the coolant and fill, if needed.
  • Follow the service maintenance schedule provided by the manufacturer to replace the coolant. It is a good practice to change the coolant every 25,000 to 40,000 miles.

Troubleshooted my problem and changed my oil in no time at all which solved my low oil pressure light. Also pointed out some issues that should be remediated as preventative measures and was really educational in why those would be problematic. In addition, he also arrived slightly earlier than the scheduled time too which was a bonus. All in all, would definitely recommend him as a mobile mechanic.

I thought I had the front brakes and rotors replaced about 6-8 months ago, but turns out it was the rear brakes I had done When I had the prior service done, the shop told me that I needed brakes for the other end as well because they were worn, but I could wait a short time but recommended I replaced them at that time. I decided to hold off on the service for the time being and have since discovered this mobile mechanic site and scheduled repair with Emmette. After Emmette took the wheel and parts off, he informed me that my brakes were not in need of replacing. Further, he checked the front brakes and told me that I had a couple more months on them. Many mechanics I have encountered would have fixed the back brakes regardless. It is obvious that the other shop was trying to get me to agree to services I did require at that time as well. I trust in Emmetter's assessment and appreciate his honesty. He also gave me much-needed advice and visual proof that I need to take time to take care of my vehicle as I have not been doing simple maintenance. I have found my new mechanic going forward.
