Any unusual shaking or vibrating forces coming from the engine is cause for concern. It could be something as simple as old spark plugs producing an uneven power delivery, it could be something serious like worn or broken engine mounts, or it could be even more serious in the case of internal engine damage.

Common reasons for this to happen:

Most often, one of the following components is at fault:

  • Old and worn spark plugs and wires (most commonly the issue)

  • Loose or disconnected hoses on and around the engine (not the coolant hoses that go to and from the radiator) are frequently culprits behind intermittent engine operation.

  • Loose connections at the positive and negative battery terminals

  • Very dirty or clogged air filters can also cause your engine to underperform.

  • Loose timing belts are another likely cause. A mechanic will check these and replace them if they appear loose and worn. To check for engine-mount problems, the mechanic may try shifting from "neutral" to "drive" and back, while the engine is running. If the vibrations disappear or reduce dramatically in "neutral," it’s likely that you need new engine mounts.

What to expect:

A top-rated mobile mechanic will come to your home or office to determine the source and cause of the shaky engine, and will then provide a detailed inspection report that includes the scope and cost of the necessary repairs.

How important is this service?

Given the range of the severity of potential issues, from faulty spark plugs to weak motor mounts, it's important to have a mechanic provide a thorough inspection as soon as possible.

Nissan Pulsar NX L4-1.6L - Car is not starting - Waldorf, Maryland
I had a recurring problem with my older car that was not starting after sitting for a few days. Sean is very knowledgeable and explained the issues very clearly He analyzed the "new" battery and found a dead cell. He gave me a quote of other maintenance things I would need in the future.

Nissan Sentra L4-1.8L - Engine is shaking, pulsating or vibrating - Alexandria, Virginia
This was the first time I used YourMechanic and to say the least I had a great experience. Going to shops and mechanics alike for some time, you always get that feeling that something else is wrong with their tone of voice and how they come off when telling you that extra parts of the car need attention when you know they don't. I had Richard come out to my apartment and he was great. He was an hour early than what was expected. Went through everything that I had been quoted for to see if it was actually needed. Took the time to explain how one can actually fix the part themselves and taught me more about my car than I initially thought. He was done in about an hour with everything that I needed. Because of some of the parts that I was quoted for didn't need to be added, I was reduced my originally price and other inspections were credited toward other services as well. I definitely will be re-booking with Richard.
