What is the Gas Cap all about?

The purpose of a Gas Cap is twofold: one, it helps prevent dust and other particles from getting into the gas tank, and two, it helps prevent fuel emissions from entering the atmosphere. If your gas cap is faulty, the Check Engine light may come on. Additionally, your vehicle may fail a smog test if the gas cap is gone or not functioning properly.

How it's done:

  • Inspect the gas cap.
  • Pressure-test the gas cap.
  • Install new gas cap if faulty.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Gas Cap?

  • Check Engine light is on.
  • Car does not pass the emission test.
  • Gas Cap is missing.

Mitsubishi Eclipse L4-2.4L - When I slow down and stop the car, engine shuts off - Oviedo, Florida
Prompt Service, I didn't have much wrong with my car, but he stayed with me longer than most mechanics would to make sure everything was running properly. He answered all my questions and gave me recommendations on different things I could do to take care of my vehicle.

Mitsubishi Eclipse V6-3.0L - Pre-purchase Car Inspection - La Habra, California
Very thorough pre-purchase inspection that led to the unveiling of multiple significant issues (as well as several minute details which even further proved the mechanic’s expertise) that the seller neglected to inform me of during negotiations. Saved me a couple thousand dollars that would’ve been spent on a deteriorating vehicle otherwise. Thank you Michael!

Mitsubishi Eclipse V6-3.0L - Alternator - Fort Worth, Texas
Anthony showed up on a very windy, below freezing day and replaced my alternator and serpentine belt. After he was done, he had to jump my car (due to the battery being completely depleted from the bad alternator) and offered to take me to the autoparts store to get it charged up. Roughly two weeks later, and things are still running great after the replacement work. Overall, very happy with his work and appreciate his willingness to help after the job was done.
