What is the Coolant Level Sensor all about?

The coolant level sensor is designed to alert the driver when the coolant level is low and to prevent overheating or damage to the engine. This aids in diagnosing leaks and other dangerous cooling system conditions.

Coolant level sensors can consist of a plastic sensor with a plastic or foam float that sits underneath the coolant reservoir cap. Or, they can be plastic sensors that plug into the radiator or other component of the cooling system.

Some vehicles are equipped with a Low Coolant or Check Coolant warning light, while others may display a picture of the vehicle with a red dot in the engine bay. This is to inform the driver that the coolant needs to be checked or that there is a fault with the sensor.

Keep in mind:

The Check Coolant warning light may seem like a nuisance, but the system is there for a reason: to inform the driver of potentially dangerous engine conditions.

How it's done:

  • The Coolant Level Sensor is verified that it needs to be replaced. The coolant is drained to be below the sensor.

  • The defective Coolant Level Sensor is removed by disconnecting the electrical connection and removing it from the radiator or reservoir.

  • The new Coolant Level Sensor is installed, connected and the coolant is refilled. Then the cooling system is purged of air.

  • The Coolant Level Sensor is tested for leaks after system is filled and engine is run.

  • The vehicle is tested to ensure proper operation of the Cooling System

Our recommendation:

If you suspect the coolant level sensor has failed, have one of our licensed mechanics come to you to diagnose the issue and replace the part. Our mechanics can determine whether the sensor float is faulty, if the sensor itself is bad, or if there is low coolant or a leak in the system.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Coolant Level Sensor?

  • Check Coolant or Low Coolant light on and displays even when coolant been topped off
  • Coolant level is low but no warning lights illuminate

How important is this service?

While you may wish to ignore the beeping and warning lights in your vehicle, it is important to get a diagnosis for the problem immediately before any further damage occurs, including unwanted coolant loss, engine overheating, and other major issues.

Mercedes-Benz CLK320 V6-3.2L - Water Pump - Rancho Cucamonga, California
Michael deserves a full 5 stars but giving him 4 stars for now and will upgrade it to 5 stars once he finishes the job. He was on time and friendly. He is smart, He had to replace the water pump which he did and he cleaned up the space after the work . So he was good. The reason for the 4 stars is he forgot to connect the coolant temperature sensor. So the fan was blowing high and the engine light came on and no reading on the coolant temp meter on the dashboard. But he scanned for codes and realized it was the temperature sensor. While connecting it he broke it but he still gets 4 stars because he admitted right away that he had broken it. He was upfront and honest instead of trying to cover it up and shift the blame, Speaks volumes about his character, He sad it would be replaced and fixed at no extra charge and he would come back and finish it after informing yourmechanic tomorrow as the office had closed. He will get his 5 stars once he finishes it. Yourmechanic has also been very good at resolving any issues on the work done and I expect that tomorrow when their office opens they will resolve it. So will give a 5 star rating when the job is completed. Hoping there are more upright and honest mechanics like Michael which is not easy to find,

Mercedes-Benz CLK320 V6-3.2L - Coolant Temperature Switch (Sensor) - Rancho Cucamonga, California
Michael deserves a full 5 stars for his honesty and work. I had rated him earlier at 4 stars because he broke the temperature sensor but admitted it right away and said he would return with the part and fix it at no charge, I admired his awesome honesty but was not sure if he would follow through and hence the 4 stars rating earlier. But he followed through and it was all completed and so he deserves the full 5 stars for his knowledge, experience and above all his integrity and honesty which is not common with the mechanics these days, So he needs to be recognized for that. I might give him a 4.95 stars which is not possible because he forgot to put back the tensioner pulley dust cap and could not find it later. Its a minor part and cant be bought at the store either which is annoying but I would still give him 5 stars because of his honesty, efficiency and knowledge. He was quick and efficient. Keep up the good work Michael.
