Ignition Cable (Spark plug wires) Replacement Service & Cost

What is the Ignition Cable (Spark plug wires) all about?

The ignition cables, also known as “spark plug wires” are part of the ignition system. They transfer the spark from the distributor or ignition coil to spark plugs that ignite the air-fuel mixture, starting the engine.

Over time, the cables can get weak and break down. This will make it harder for the spark to reach the engine cylinders, resulting in engine misfires. The car may not start at all. If one of the spark plugs has gone bad, the car will still start and run, but it will run poorly.

Keep in mind:

  • Ignition cable failure is often caused by other failing pieces in the ignition system; a mechanic should check for any other malfunctioning parts, and replace any parts of the system that don’t work.
  • Every time the ignition cables are replaced, the spark plugs should be inspected.
  • Leaking oil or coolant can cause ignition wire failure. If this is the case, the cause of the leak should be repaired or replaced, or else the new ignition wires will quickly be damaged as well.

How it's done:

  • Scan the computer system in the car for codes.
  • Inspect ignition cables (look for white spots).
  • Ohm test on individual cables.
  • Remove and replace the cables if found faulty.
  • Inspect the spark plugs.
  • Clear the codes.

Our recommendation:

Ignition wires should be replaced at least every 60,000 miles, but whenever your car is serviced, it’s a good idea to have the entire ignition system inspected. Any time that you have spark plugs replaced, it’s a good idea to have the ignition wires replaced as well. If you notice that your engine is running poorly, you should schedule an inspection.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Ignition Cable (Spark plug wires)?

  • Check Engine light is on.
  • Engine misfires.
  • Poor gas mileage.
  • Engine may shake (light vibration).

How important is this service?

The fuel in your automobile is ignited by a spark. This starts with the ignition coil, which transforms low voltage power into extremely high voltage. This high voltage is transferred through the ignition cables, and to the spark plug, where a spark is created that ignites the engine’s fuel, and powers the engine.

When one or more ignition cables fail, this voltage will not be transferred from the ignition coil to the spark plugs, and the fuel will not be ignited. Depending on how many of your ignition cables malfunction, your car will either run poorly, or won’t run at all.

I posted this same thing on Yelp, but I mean every word! Excellent service! Very happy with having some much needed brake work done with Your Mechanic and Richard. He updated me on his arrival and made me aware he could come early. I was getting my back brake rotors and pads done, and he informed me that he could get it done 30 minutes earlier than they quoted. He did a great check on the rest of my car and informed me of what I would need next since I have a car with high mileage. With the heat being up to 100 degrees and over today, I felt bad about him being out there and got him a couple bottles of cold water. He didn't complain and he even waited while I took a test drive. Even answered some questions I had about my car without making me feel stupid lol. Best price that I've seen for that kind of work, but the work was probably better than the mechanic that tried to charge me double! Glad to know that you don't have to sacrifice quality for convenience and a better price! Great first experience with Your Mechanic and a big thank you to Richard! I'm recommending him to everyone I know, and I know who to call when I need anything else done!

Experience was extremely disappointing. I had a check engine light that I didn't have time to deal with and I had to do a smog check so I book an appointment for an check-engine light inspection for my 2005 Miata. He is a little late (no big deal) but he calls me exactly in one hour to the minute. He tells me the air intake temp sensor needs to be replaced. His reasoning is that the resistance for the sensor is off and is most likely the cause of the check-engine light. He also told me my valve cover gasket needs to be replaced, which it does. I get home and decide to take some time and look at the problem myself with my very limited mechanic skills. I look up the engine code online that I asked him for and first answer of google quickly lists for things to check: air intake temp sensor, dirty air filter, and dirty mass air flow sensor. I open the hood and find that my air filter compartment isn't even properly closed and the air filter is very dusty. I do a little more research and find that most people also clean their MAF sensors from time to time when they change their air filter, so I do that, too. I clear the check engine code, run it for a couple days and I pass the smog. Had I listened to Khoa's advice, I would have been down $35 for the air intake sensor and wasted even more of my time and money getting him to come back and diagnose the problem correctly. He had an hour with my car and he didn't even bother to look at other potential issues that could be causing my problem.
