What is the Horn Relay all about?

The horn relay attaches a low power circuit to an electromagnet, which operates a mechanical switch. That switch either opens or closes a circuit that carries a higher power, which causes the horn to sound. There is a low power circuit running to your car’s steering wheel, and when it is activated, the horn sounds. When you release the horn button, the low power circuit is opened and the power level of the relay drops, silencing the horn.

Keep in mind:

  • You are required by law to have a working horn in your car.
  • Your car horn is a safety mechanism that allows you to warn other drivers of potential danger.

How it's done:

  • The vehicle battery is disconnected
  • The horn relay position is identified
  • The new horn relay and wiring are installed
  • The battery is reconnected
  • The repair is verified and the vehicle horn is tested for proper operation

Our recommendation:

If your horn isn’t working properly, you have no way of alerting another driver that he or she is about to collide with your vehicle, and you have no way of telling other drivers of any dangers further down the road. Our expert mechanics can diagnose any problems with your car horn, and if necessary, can replace the horn relay for you.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Horn Relay?

  • You press the horn button and nothing happens
  • You press the horn button but all you hear is a click
  • Horn only works sometimes

How important is this service?

Your horn is your first line of defense when it comes to problems in traffic. With an inoperable horn relay, your horn won’t work at all. If your horn isn’t working properly, get one of our expert mechanics to immediately correct the problem.

My husband and I had never used Your Mechanic, and we chose to use their service to fix our car after a friend of ours saw the site and recommended it to us. I am sooooo happy we did! Phillip was a complete professional from beginning to end. He came to our home twenty minutes before the scheduled time, and did not stop until the job was done. He was friendly, well spoken, informative about the work that was done, and we saved a LOT of money by using this company. I would refer anyone in need of car repair to this company, and in this particular town, I would suggest using Phillip if he's available! :) He's worth a tip. Thanks again, Phillip. You're awesome. If you're reading this because you need repair and you're wondering if this is legit... Your Mechanic is worth your time. - Mike and Christy
