Brake Shoe Replacement (Rear) Service & Cost

What are the Brake Shoes (Rear) all about?

Brake shoes are found only at the rear wheels in cars with a drum brake system. When you step on the brake pedal, brake shoes press against the brake drums to cause friction that slows down the car. Brake shoes usually last twice as long as brake pads.

Keep in mind:

  • Both brake shoes should be replaced at the same time.
  • Damaged brake drums and leaky wheel cylinders can sometimes cause damage to brake shoes, so those elements may need replacing as well.

How it's done:

  • Inspect brake shoes for contamination and thickness.
  • Replace brake shoes if faulty.
  • Adjust the brakes.
  • Inspect springs, backing plate, brake cylinders, brake drums, and emergency brake cable.
  • Lubricate the backing plate.
  • Perform basic safety inspection, including test drive.

Our recommendation:

It is a good idea to get the brake shoes inspected and measured once a year. To inspect brake shoes, the mechanic will usually have to take the tires off. If you are getting a brake service, and if the brake shoes are still good, just have them cleaned and adjusted. Get your brake system inspected if the brake warning light is on. If the shoes need replacing, we highly recommend ceramic brake shoes.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Brake Shoes (Rear)?

  • Noise from rear brakes.
  • Hand brake does not hold.
  • Car shakes upon braking.

How important is this service?

All services associated with proper function of your brakes are important. In addition to safety issues, ignoring small repairs can quickly lead to more serious (and more expensive) problems.

TL;DR - this guy pretty much totaled my car I wish I could give less than one star. I booked an appointment to get my cracked radiator replaced at 1:30 on a Thursday. At 1:00, Carlos called and told me he "didn't feel like driving to get the part" and asked if he could do it the following day. I told him I needed the repair done that day, which is why I booked the appointment for that day. He showed up at 3:30 only to say it was too hot outside, and that he would come back at 9am Friday morning to beat the heat. As of 10:30, there was no sign of him. I called, only to have him tell me about a family medical that had started earlier in the week, and detailed how tragic it was and how upset each member of his family was. In addition to the oversharing being rather unprofessional, I didn't understand why he would schedule an appointment that he knew he wouldn't be able to make, as he had already been aware of the medical issue before the appointment was scheduled. He also mentioned his personal finances and how he needed the appointment to pay his bills. I'm all for sympathy, but I also really needed a car, and scheduled an appointment for the purpose of getting my car working again. He finally showed up and replaced the radiator on Saturday morning, but called me to tell me that now my car was overheating (it hadn't done that before he worked on it). My dad, a former mechanic, had been watching the repair and noted that Carlos bled the coolant system with the nose of the car pointing downhill, despite it being fairly common knowledge that it needs to be done either on a level surface or with the nose of the car pointing uphill. He also said he filled the coolant tank with 50/50 water and coolant, which is inappropriate because my car needs a specific kind of coolant (clearly indicated by the coolant tank cap). Bonus - he lied! It was all water. He said he would show up later on Saturday to figure out what was wrong/why it was overheating. He never showed up. I had another mechanic from the company show up to figure out how bad the engine damage is due to the overheating caused by the bad radiator repair, but he can't diagnose it yet because Carlos actually installed the NEW radiator wrong, causing it to crack as well. I have another appointment now (with another mechanic, thank god) to get the new radiator replaced, and then they'll be able to tell how badly my engine is damaged. It's very likely at this point that my car is totaled, due 110% to this guy's incompetence. I'm very interested to see how the company handles this. I've now been carless for almost a week, and they've made no effort to get me an alternate mode of transportation/pay for a rental car despite the 4+ reschedules/missed appointments dragging this out way past the date of my initial scheduled repair. It also took 3 calls to the escalation team to hear back from anyone about sending a new person out to begin with.
