What is the Emergency/Parking Brake Cable all about?

The parking brake cable is a thin, steel cable that connects the parking brake lever to the parking brake shoes. It is located underneath the car. When you pull the lever, this cable enables the parking brake shoes to press against the rotor or the drum, creating the friction that keeps the car from rolling. It is just like using the brake pedal, but in this case, you are using the parking brake cable instead of brake fluids to apply the pressure. Over time the cable can rust and break. If the parking brake cable is broken, the car will roll even when the parking brake has been engaged.

Keep in mind:

The brake drums or pads often need to be removed to access the emergency brake cable. During this time, the drums and pads should be inspected to see if they also need to be replaced.

How it's done:

  • Remove and replace parking brake cable.
  • Adjust parking brake.
  • Test parking brake.

Our recommendation:

Always apply the parking brake when the car is parked. This will keep the parking brake adjusted properly. Your mechanic should inspect the parking brake cable during every brake service. They should also periodically spray rust penetrant chemical on the cable to prevent rust from building up.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Emergency/Parking Brake Cable?

  • Parking brake does not hold car.
  • Parking brake does not release.
  • Parking brake warning light is on.

How important is this service?

All services associated with proper function of your brakes are important. In addition to safety issues, ignoring small repairs can quickly lead to more serious (and more expensive) problems.

BMW X5 L6-3.0L Turbo - Pre-purchase Car Inspection - Rockville, Maryland
I put down a deposit on a used BMW X5 in Maryland and couldn't check out the SUV myself because I lived in a different state. I had Jerome do a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) on the SUV to make sure that it was ok before buying it. Before the PPI, I asked Jerome to check the A/C because a weak A/C is a known problem with BMW X5's. Jerome did a very thorough job inspecting the vehicle and test drove it too. Afterwards, Jerome called me to let me know that the car is in great condition but he found some errors stored in the car's computer. Pictures of the car and the errors were provided in the PPI. He also told me the A/C was quite cool (he measured 60's inside) even though it was a very hot day in the 90's. I had a lot of questions for Jerome about the errors and whether I should still buy the car and Jerome patiently answered all of my questions. I am very satisfied with the PPI and would recommend Jerome for PPI's.
