How Long Does a Trunk Latch Last?

trunk latch

The trunk latch is located on the trunk of your vehicle and attached to the bottom of your vehicle to securely close the trunk. It is watertight and protects your valuables from the elements. Some vehicles have modules, fuses, and batteries in the trunk area because the trunks can be opened and closed with the key module or the touch of a button. For this reason, the latch plays an important part in the operation of your vehicle.

Trunk latches come in many different forms and vary greatly depending on what make and model vehicle you have. The latch can be a locking mechanism in the center or your trunk, motors and sensors, or a metal hook. If any of these parts are not working properly, as in the hook brakes, a motor goes out, or the locking mechanism fails, then you will need your trunk latch replaced. Have a certified mechanic replace the failing trunk latch to eliminate any further problems with your vehicle.

Most modern trunk latches are made out of metal and electrical parts, for these reasons they are prone to failure or wear out over time. Some may last the lifetime of your vehicle, but others may need to be replaced. In some cases, a trunk latch adjustment may be done where the latch needs to be realigned. If this is the case, the latch may not need to be replaced.

Since the trunk latch can wear down, go bad, and potentially fail over time, it is important to know the symptoms they give off before they completely fail.

Signs that indicate your trunk latch needs to be replaced include:

  • The trunk does not close all of the way

  • The trunk will not open either remotely or manually

  • One part of the trunk is higher than the other

  • You have problems closing the trunk

  • The trunk latch is missing on your vehicle

This repair should not be put off because once the trunk starts going bad, you do not know when it will pop open or will stay open, which is a safety hazard.
