This is my third time using Steven and like the previous two times before he was very professional; knew what he was doing; fixed the problem on the first try and in a very timely manner. Wonderful guy to have around when you have so many grand kids to fix their cars all the time. Thanks again Steven.
Good job on the work. Came early, straight to work, finished both jobs pretty quickly considering the amount of work done with the sensor job. (Watching him, it would have taken me a good 6 hours, if not all day to do what he did. I wish I had the tools he had. He's actually a real true mechanic! Hard to find these guys nowadays. Beyond satisfied that I booked Your Mechanic) Unknown to him, my wife needed to be out the door and on her way in this vehicle to several time sensitive appointments.. The jobs were done with time to spare for getting ready. I'm not sure why I haven't contacted Your Mechanic sooner! Since they come to you, I consider this a godsend!

Ben was fantastic! He arrived early which was a pleasant surprise. Our anticipated service time was around two and a half hours, but he was done in about one hour. He worked quickly, efficiently, and at the end explained everything thoroughly. He showed us the new and old parts, walked us through the report, and explained what he thought the next step in maintaining our vehicle should be. This was our first time using the Your Mechanic service and Ben completely sold us on it!
Ben did an excellent job as expected.

Breck arrived a little early and was very friendly and polite. He knows exactly what he was doing and the job of installing a speed sensor took no time at all. Breck knew my vehicle like it was his. I have friends who I have recommended to call and request Breck when in need of car repair.

Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement Service

What is the Wheel Speed Sensor all about?

A wheel speed sensor, also called an "ABS sensor," is part of the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS). It is located on the tires (near the brake rotors for the front tires and in the rear end housing for the rear tires). The job of the wheel speed sensor is to constantly monitor and report the rotational speed of each tire to the ABS control module. ABS is a safety system that prevents your car from skidding or sliding when you apply the brakes. When the brake is applied, the ABS control module reads the speed data from the speed sensor and sends the correct pressure to each wheel to prevent any sliding/skidding (wheels locking up).

On cars that come with rotors in each tire, each tire will also have a speed sensor. On cars that have rear drums (instead of rotors), the tires will have one sensor in the rear and two sensors in the front. When one or more of these sensors are faulty, the ABS warning light will go on and the ABS will be disabled. You will still be able to slow down and stop your car, but the tires may slide when you apply brakes, esp. on slippery surfaces.

Keep in mind:

  • The TCS (Traction Control System) relies on the same wheel speed sensors as the ABS, so replacing the sensors can fix both systems.
  • Each wheel has at least one speed sensor, so it is possible that only one of the sensors needs replacing.
  • Sometimes sensors stop working because they are dirty. In this case, the mechanic will repair your sensor by cleaning it, rather than replacing it.

How it's done:

  • Scan the ABS system for codes.
  • Inspect entire brake system.
  • Inspect sensor and reluctor wheel.
  • Remove and replace the wheel speed sensor.
  • Check for proper operations.

Our recommendation:

During a brake service, the mechanic will make sure that the sensor is free of debris or grease that may prevent the sensor from functioning properly.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Wheel Speed Sensor?

  • ABS warning light is on.
  • ABS system is not working.
  • Traction control warning light is on.

How important is this service?

Without wheel speed sensors, your ABS and TCS will not work. These systems rely on information from the wheel speed sensors; the sensors tell the ABS when to unlock the brakes to avoid sliding, and they tell the TCS when to distribute power to different wheels so that you stay in control of your vehicle. Without wheel speed sensors, the ABS and TCS do not have the information they need, and so they shut off, leaving your car without two primary safety features.
