Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement Service

What is the Drive Belt Tensioner all about?

A Drive Belt Tensioner is a pulley mounted to either a spring mechanism or to an adjustable pivot point that is used to keep constant tension on your serpentine belt. That is the big long belt in the front of your engine.

The tensioner rides on the outside surface of the belt to put pressure, or tension, on the belt and against the pulleys that drive things like the alternator, power steering, air conditioner, etc.

Keep in mind:

Tensioners usually come with pulleys; they are normally replaced together. Also, when replacing a tensioner, the drive belt usually must be removed. A mechanic may recommend replacing the belt as well.

How it's done:

  • Check for any noise in the engine (usually a squeaky or grinding noise).
  • Remove the drive belt(s) (in most cases).
  • Inspect drive belt pulleys.
  • Check the drive belt tensioner.
  • Remove and replace the tensioner if faulty.
  • Start car to see if noise is gone.

Our recommendation:

Your drive belt tensioner should always be inspected when your drive belt is serviced. During routine maintenance and inspection, your drive belt system should be reviewed to make sure that all the components are in working order. The drive belt tensioner will usually last longer than the drive belts, so as long as your tensioner is inspected or replaced when your drive belts are, your belt system should remain in good shape.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Drive Belt Tensioner?

Unusual noise (squeaky or grinding sound) every time you start the engine.

How important is this service?

The air conditioning, power steering, and alternator in your vehicle are given power through the drive belt. The belt is attached to both the crankshaft and these systems, and transfers power from the engine to drive each of these components. The drive belt tensioner is responsible for keeping the tension in the drive belt, which allows it to continue moving and transferring power. When the drive belt tensioner fails, the tension in the drive belt will begin to diminish, and the vehicle will not operate as well.

Nissan Frontier V6-4.0L - Drive Belt Tensioner - Houston, Texas
Eduardo texted to say he could arrive earlier than my appointment which was great for me - he showed looking 100% professional and completed the work promptly! Very professional and I would book him again.
Chevrolet Sonic - Drive Belt Tensioner - Houston, Texas
Eduardo arrived at 8am right on the dot, and was working on my car within a few minutes. He was finished with my Sonic in about 30 minutes, which was shocking, because with how cramped everything is in my car's engine bay, I figured replacing the drive belt tensioner was going to take at least an hour or more. He handed me my old tensioner, had me sign, and he was on his way. An excellent mechanic that I would definitely recommend, and also one I would re-book again for future work!

Audi S4 V6-3.0L Turbo - Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement - Houston, Texas
I have gone to several mechanics in the last year who replaced different parts they thought were causing problems and never actually fixed my car. I know Audi’s can be very difficult but Andrew took the time to truly diagnose the issue and fixed it in one appointment. My car is now running better than ever! I highly recommend working with him!

Breck is very skilled. He found the problem with my vehicle very professionally. He made sure to check EVERYWHERE in my vehicle before making a final decision. What I liked most is that he explained and even demonstrated the problem with my vehicle to me! The problem was the tensioner pulley; he showed the good part and the bad part side by side and showed me why it was failing. Overall, very knowledgeable, professional and hospitable. Would definitely book again and recommend to anyone.

Chris came out twice to do one job. When he arrived to change the belt out on my car, he noticed another issue that could be handled in the same procedure. He didn't charge me for the first appointment and made arrangements to come out and change the belt and fix the other issue. He was courteous and friendly and on time.
