What is the Auxiliary Battery all about?

The vast majority of passenger vehicles on the road today have only a single, large battery. It’s generally located under the hood, although some makes and models have the primary battery in the trunk, near the spare tire. This battery’s job is simple – it provides the electricity needed to start the engine. All other power generated during operation to power the radio, signal lights, and other accessories comes from the alternator.

However, some vehicles (notably higher-end European imports) have more than one battery. There’s the primary battery under the hood, but there’s also an auxiliary battery. These are used to power other systems on the car that require 12 volts of power, and which the alternator is not capable of powering directly. In these instances, the alternator is responsible for charging both the primary and the auxiliary battery. The primary battery delivers voltage during cranking, and the auxiliary battery runs some or most of the car’s accessories.

Like all batteries, auxiliary batteries will eventually wear out or fail. When this happens, they’ll need to be replaced.

Keep in mind:

  • Auxiliary batteries can be checked during maintenance, but it’s necessary to work with a mechanic familiar with the setup of your vehicle.
  • Auxiliary battery failure generally does not prevent you from driving, but it will create complications such as accessory functions not working.
  • Battery size, location, and cost vary drastically from one vehicle to another.

How it's done:

  • The Auxiliary battery is verified that it needs to be replaced. Accessories are removed as needed for access.
  • The defective Auxiliary battery is disconnected and removed.
  • The battery connections are cleaned and the new Auxiliary battery is installed, secured, and connected.
  • Any accessories that were removed for access are reinstalled. The Auxiliary battery is tested for operation.
  • The vehicle is tested to ensure proper operation of the Auxiliary battery.

Our recommendation:

Over time and through normal use, your battery deteriorates. Eventually, it will fail completely. Most have a lifespan of about five to seven years, but this is only an estimate. Once your auxiliary battery fails, it puts a strain on the rest of your system, and some of your accessories may not operate properly or at all. Have the problem professionally diagnosed by one of our expert mechanics as electrical issues can stem from many different problems, not just battery failure.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Auxiliary Battery?

  • AUX Battery light on in the dash
  • Some or all accessories not working properly

How important is this service?

While a failed auxiliary battery will not prevent your vehicle from driving, it can cause significant complications, including important accessories malfunctioning or not working at all. It can also put additional strain on the rest of your charging system components. Have the auxiliary battery replaced as soon as possible.

Volkswagen Jetta L4-1.9L Turbo Diesel - Radiator - Fernandina Beach, Florida
Arrived nearly three hours late for my appointment, which precluded my ability to be there when work was nearly completed. My battery was dead, and for whatever reason the auto mechanic I had hired was not allowed to jumpstart my vehicle. So I had to jump the car the next day and finish the job which I had already paid for. Then I was sent an insane quote for $410 to have my battery replaced. It's a real bummer to not have a local mechanic when you own a VW, but holy sh*t this YourMechanic is awful. The ONLY positive is they come to you and service the vehicle that otherwise cannot be driven. God willing, I will never again need the service from this App. Brian was a nice enough guy, but no apology for the extreme tardiness and no offer to return and finish the work I paid for is the reason I felt compelled to leave a poor review.
