What is the Emergency/Parking Brake Cable all about?

The parking brake cable is a thin, steel cable that connects the parking brake lever to the parking brake shoes. It is located underneath the car. When you pull the lever, this cable enables the parking brake shoes to press against the rotor or the drum, creating the friction that keeps the car from rolling. It is just like using the brake pedal, but in this case, you are using the parking brake cable instead of brake fluids to apply the pressure. Over time the cable can rust and break. If the parking brake cable is broken, the car will roll even when the parking brake has been engaged.

Keep in mind:

The brake drums or pads often need to be removed to access the emergency brake cable. During this time, the drums and pads should be inspected to see if they also need to be replaced.

How it's done:

  • Remove and replace parking brake cable.
  • Adjust parking brake.
  • Test parking brake.

Our recommendation:

Always apply the parking brake when the car is parked. This will keep the parking brake adjusted properly. Your mechanic should inspect the parking brake cable during every brake service. They should also periodically spray rust penetrant chemical on the cable to prevent rust from building up.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Emergency/Parking Brake Cable?

  • Parking brake does not hold car.
  • Parking brake does not release.
  • Parking brake warning light is on.

How important is this service?

All services associated with proper function of your brakes are important. In addition to safety issues, ignoring small repairs can quickly lead to more serious (and more expensive) problems.

Saturn SL1 L4-1.9L - Serpentine/Drive Belt - Hampton, Virginia
I live in Hampton, VA, and my mechanic was Matt. He was absolutely amazing. He was more competent and knowledgeable than any local shop that I've used to date. The prices are more than fair. In future, I will ALWAYS use this service unless it is a repair they don't offer. Thank you, YourMechanic and Matt, for an experience that was above and beyond my expectations.

Very good. Emanuel showed me that the crankshaft seal was not leaking. It was the head gasket; he advised to just watch it.

Saturn SL1 L4-1.9L - Brake Drum - Kissimmee, Florida
It's great to have your own mechanic and Enrique is a professional. He shows up on time, promptly gets to the job you've shceduled and completes it quickly. He then takes the car for a test run to make sure he's done the job in the best way possible. He's friendly, polite and knows his cars - couldn't ask for better service! So happy I found Your Mechanic! In the past I would take the car in and sometimes have to leave it because they couldn't get to my car with all the others ahead of it. Love the ease of being able to schedule Enrique and know he'll show up and get the job done and I'll be driving my car again in a few hours! And I don't have to drop it off or wait in a waiting room for it.
