When an air filter becomes dirty, it can have a dramatic effect on performance and the engine may run rough. When the air filter becomes clogged, these problems can become even worse and your vehicle may stop running altogether. When an engine does not get enough clean air it may run “rich,” which means that the engine is receiving too much gasoline and not enough air. Engines that run rich struggle to maintain power, which can be very noticeable when driving.

How this system works:

Your vehicle’s air filter keeps dirt and other contaminants from entering the engine and potentially damaging critical components. Air filters need to be replaced every 10,000 to 15,000 miles, though vehicles in areas of high congestion may need to have their air filters changed more frequently. Most modern vehicles have rectangular filters fitted inside a plastic case in the engine compartment. Older, carbureted engines typically have a circular filter placed above the carburetor. Automotive air filters are made from either paper, foam, or cotton, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages relative to the cost and filtering ability.

Common reasons for this to happen:

  • Air filters are dirty: Air filters will get dirty and become less effective over time. As more dust and other particles are collected, the filter will struggle to maintain good airflow to the engine. In areas where smog is prevalent, or where there is a lot of traffic congestion, air filters may get dirtier more quickly.

If a dirty air filter is not replaced, it can become clogged. A clogged air filter severely limits the amount of air making it to the engine. A clogged air filter may fail, allowing dirt and other contaminants into the engine. This will result in extremely poor performance, and may cause permanent damage to the engine.

What to expect:

A top-rated mobile mechanic will come to your home or office to determine the extent of the damage done by the clogged filter and provide a replacement. The mechanic will then provide a detailed inspection report outlining if any damage has been done by the clogged filter, and the cost of any repairs that need to be made.

How it's done:

A mechanic will first remove the air filter from its compartment in the engine bay to determine the extent of the clog and if there is any damage to other engine components. The mechanic should then provide a replacement filter and make sure that it fits well. A poorly fitting, or incorrect filter may allow large particles or other contaminants into the engine. When the new filter is installed, the mechanic should replace the cover and make sure that the filter is sealed well. When the replacement is complete, the mechanic should have you start the engine to check how it runs. If the engine struggles to run well after the new filter is installed, the mechanic may have to investigate if further damage has been done to the engine by the clogged filter. The mechanic will make sure that all necessary repairs have been made and the engine is running well before he or she leaves.

How important is this service?

A poorly running engine, or a vehicle that seems to be down on power may be suffering from a clogged air filter. A clogged air filter will only get worse over time and may cause further damage to the vehicle if it is not replaced. It is important to have your vehicle’s air filter replaced every 10,000 to 15,000 miles, or more often depending on if you live in an area with higher congestion. Your mechanic should help you determine how often your vehicle’s air filter should be replaced.

Mazda dealer told me the engine light meant a $400 repair. Tou checked it, cleared the alert and said let's see if it returns, then I'll replace the part. So far, so good. Saved my a bunch of money!

Mazda MX-5 Miata L4-2.0L - Check Engine Light is on - Los Angeles, California
I posted this on YELP~ This was the most stressful car repair experience I have ever had. My MAzda Miata Mx-5 check engine light was on and I already knew it was one of two codes relating to fuel injection. I called last Wed. and scheduled an apt for Monday 100 pm. Monday 115- no mechanic.I called & the man told me he would call me right back....2 hrs later I called again. The woman said she would call me right back. No call Back. After wasting the entire day waiting, I left feedback on Facebook. I was told that they had called me back.I'm staring at my phone - no calls. I leave more feedback.I am told Kevin will come at 700 and I need to call again to confirm that is ok.I call and say fine though by this time I am wary it will turn out well. The woman on the phone insists I give her my VIN number and I cannot understand why, I question her, saying he is checking codes and then deciding what part he needs, so why would you need to call Mazda with my VIN Number. She gets testy and demands it, I go retrieve it outside. I tell her and she says So what part do you want me to order? I say how would I know the mechanic did not come yet! She gets frustrated with me as if I wasted her time. I get an email telling me Kevin is coming to a different address than is on my profile & the address I have told them I live at. I go for a walk because I am so upset that everything is turning out so badly I'm wondering if I stopped making sense. Kevin calls 4 times, he came early, he's sitting at the end of the street as they gave him the wrong address/n. . He is the nicest mechanic I have ever met. He quickly checks the code. He tells me there is NO WAY it can be done by YourMECHANIC- the car needs to be raised in the air and smoke needs to be blown thru the pipes to show where the leak is.Whoever does this will check the codes again, thats how it goes. SO I wasted my entire day and my money on something that could not be done out of a shop. Today I get an email with my receipt and Service Report. .I click the link - it says: The page you were looking for does not exist. You may have mistyped the address or the page may have moved. Today I feel more centered knowing it is not me who has stopped making sense, I can find a mechanic that communicates in a manner other Humans do and next time my money will not be completely wasted. So Maddy M of YOURMECHANIC said sorry they couldnt do the work - I said what about the other many many many mistakes from last wed. to the final mistake with the blank service email on Tuesday. I would like a refund as I already had the codes and I could have been told the very first time I called that this job could not be done at my house , that it needed to be done in a shop.
