What is the Hydraulic Brake Booster all about?

Conventional brake systems are equipped with vacuum boosters, but many vehicles today are equipped with hydraulic brake booster systems that use hydraulic pressure generated by the vehicle’s power steering pump instead of the vacuum system. This type of system works especially well with diesel engines, since there is no need for a separate vacuum source. This type of system uses fluid pressure from the power steering pump as a source of pressure to the master cylinder when you apply the brake pedal.

Keep in mind:

  • Hydraulic brake booster inspection is not part of your routine brake maintenance.
  • As is the case with all hydraulic systems, leakage can cause problems.

How it's done:

  • The vehicle battery is disconnected
  • The defective hydraulic brake booster is removed
  • The new hydraulic brake booster is installed and the battery is reconnected
  • The hydraulic fluid is filled and the engine is started and leak checked
  • The repair is verified and the vehicle is road tested for proper operation

Our recommendation:

If you suspect leaking in your hydraulic brake booster, have your vehicle inspected as soon as possible. If you have no stopping power, your safety is compromised. One of our expert mechanics will identify the problem and help you fix it.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Hydraulic Brake Booster?

  • There is brake fluid leaking onto the ground
  • Brake pedal is hard to press
  • Brakes ‘grab’ unusually
  • It takes a lot of effort to stop the vehicle

How important is this service?

Brake issues should always be dealt with immediately, as it may result in fatal consequences. If you’re due for a motor vehicle inspection, you won’t pass if the brakes aren’t working.
