What is the throttle valve cable all about?

The throttle valve cable is a key component of a transmission system. The throttle valve cable is responsible for maintaining proper shift feel, controlling line pressure, and both partial and full throttle downshifts. The throttle valve cable is connected to the throttle lever, and is responsible for controlling it. Regardless of how much torque your engine is generating, the throttle valve cable will be able to keep the shift feel and transmission line pressure in balance.

Keep in mind:

  • When the throttle valve cable is adjusted, the entire transmission system should be inspected.
  • Replacing the carburetor can sometimes make it impossible for the throttle valve cable to be properly adjusted.

Our recommendation:

Your transmission is one of the most important parts of your vehicle to service. During maintenance and tuneups every part of the suspension should be checked, including the throttle valve cable. Always follow your car’s suggested maintenance schedule for the transmission.

What are the common symptoms indicating you need to adjust the throttle valve cable?

  • Transmission (gear) does not shift properly

How important is this service?

The transmission is what is used to switch gears so that your vehicle runs smoothly and optimally. A key part of this system is the throttle lever, which keeps the shift feel and transmission line pressure in balance at all times. The throttle lever is controlled by the throttle valve cable. One of the key roles that the throttle lever and throttle valve cable play is that they’re responsible for downshifting your vehicle when it is going uphill. The throttle valve cable helps the engine find the right gear to maximize torque. When the throttle valve cable is not properly adjusted, a key component of the transmission is lost. Since the transmission is such a finely tuned machine, an unadjusted throttle valve cable can result in severe damage to the transmission.

Miguel would get 10 stars from me if it was possible. Very knowledgeable about cars and he takes pride in doing things right. He took time and explained what work was being done and why the car was responding the way it was. I am very appreciative of him and won't hesitate to book his services again.

Lexus RX330 V6-3.3L - Brake Pads Replacement (Front, Rear) - Roseville, California
Chris is very knowledgeable mechanically, professional, friendly and a Master Automotive Technician. He is also very courteous and a pleasant person to talk to. He changed my brakes and rotors and knew exactly what he was doing and did it quickly. He inspected my car and noticed other areas that should be addressed. I was so impressed with his professional skills that I had him book another appointment with me for next week to repair additional areas of concern I had bought the Lexus as a pre-owned car and saw the type of work the Lexus Technicians did vs the work that Chris did. Simple things such as lubing bolts before you put them on (which Lexus Technicians did not) or adjusting the parking brake which was not on the original order. I've always headed the saying that "It's up to you to choose what you do in life, but always strive to be the best at what you do." Chris has definitely done that.
