What is lubricating the suspension all about?

The suspension allows the wheels of a vehicle to roll over bumps and through potholes while keeping the car in control and the passengers comfortable. Numerous parts in the suspension system move around and connect to the vehicle via joints. Common joints include ball joints and u-joints. Proper lubrication keeps moving parts moving. Some connections in the suspension will contain bushings that could benefit from lubrication as well.

Keep in mind:

  • If components in the suspension of a vehicle are broken or missing, lubrication will not fix the problem.
  • Different parts take different kinds of lube, so consult the vehicle’s manual for the manufacturers recommendation.
  • Some vehicles come with joints that are “permanently lubricated” from the factory. These may need to be lubricated if they exhibit symptoms of excess friction.

How it's done:

  • Apply grease to the zerk fittings of all the steering and suspension parts.

Our recommendation:

The manufacturer should have a certain number of miles it suggests in the owner's manual that the vehicle will travel before needing lubrication on parts of the suspension. Different joints, pivots, and bushings will need individual attention. Some parts will need more attention than others. When accessing the points in the suspension that need to be serviced, inspect surrounding parts and components that may show wear. This includes parts along the drivetrain or within the steering system. Preventative maintenance can be very straightforward with regular inspection of crucial parts.

What are the common symptoms indicating you need to lubricate the suspension?

  • Loud squeaking from under the car when it goes over bumps
  • Groaning sound when turning
  • Suspension not moving smoothly, feels too bumpy

How important is this service?

This service is important in several ways. Without proper lubrication, the suspension will not provide a comfortable ride. If the vehicle is not going over sumps smoothly, the handling could be negatively affected. Expensive parts wear out faster with excess friction.

Chris is the best! On time, honest, thorough, and a great mechanic. Chris has repaired multiple issues with my 2004 Dodge Ram over the past year and I've been satisfied with every repair. I never feel like Chris is pressuring me to do more than what's needed, quite the opposite. Very refreshing to work with someone like that. Thanks Chris!

Dodge Durango V8-4.7L - AC Compressor - Winter Garden, Florida
I mean REALLY... no waiting and sitting in a dealership or garage for HOURS and hearing many times: " we are backed up and can't get to your car today- EVEN WITH AN APPOINTMENT!". That was for simple oil changes and flat repairs. Enrique, MY mechanic, arrived 20 minutes early for the booked app't. He arrived with all the parts and tools necessary for the job ahead of him. He was full of energy and a great personality and, most importantly, a positive attitude. He assured me over and OVER that he would get my AC working again with no worries. Within 20 minutes of starting, it began to downpour and drench us 2 hours prior to what the weather forecast app had said. I repeatedly told him that i would reschedule so he wouldn't have to work in these conditions but he INSISTED that he would get my AC working. He popped up a tent he had in his car and along with my umbrella continued to work on my car. He was relentless. a couple hours later - cold air AC working. He also inspected my car for other future and present issues and sent me quotes via email for things i knew existed so felt confident in his diagnosis. no surprises for me. I received detailed receipts with step by step pricing and work completed which i never received from my dealership or garages. This has been the BEST experience dealing with car repairs EVER. i will DEFINTIELY call on Enrique and this website again for my future car issues.

Dodge Dakota V6-3.9L - Car Inspection - Rancho Cucamonga, California
Although Alex was about 1.5hrs late apparently due to a mix up, he was very cordial and professional. We were told by our AAA technician that we needed to replace the alternator. However upon inspection, Alex concluded that in fact it was the battery that was faulty rather than the alternator. We really appreciated his honesty and saved us some money. I will certainly recommend to friends and family.
