What is power steering fluid all about?

Power steering fluid flows through the power steering hydraulic system. The system is pressurised by the power steering pump and by way of valves, plungers, or pistons decreases the effort needed by the driver to turn the steering wheel. When the pump stops pumping, the pressure drops and the power steering system loses its hydraulic pressure.

As components in the steering system wear, metal particles will contaminate the fluid, which will cause seals in the system to leak and components to eventually fail. Checking the fluid level and changing the fluid at regular intervals recommended by the manufacturer is important for the life of the hoses, pistons, valves, seals, and the power steering pump itself.

Keep in mind:

  • Pouring in the wrong fluid or overfilling the system can cause expensive damage. The mechanic will need to consult the vehicle owner's or service manual.
  • If the fluid is low, the mechanic will check the hoses, fittings, and clamps for leaks.

How it's done:

  • Empty the power steering reservoir
  • Fill with the correct type and quantity of new fluid
  • Bleed the power steering system/clean up any residual fluid
  • Test operation of power steering
  • Check for any power steering leaks

Our recommendation:

Consider getting a power steering flush once every 3-4 years.

What are the common symptoms indicating you need to replace the power steering fluid?

  • Groaning noise from the power steering pump or steering gear
  • Difficulty in turning the steering wheel
  • Contaminated fluid (brown/black)

How important is this service?

Changing your power steering fluid at manufacturer recommended intervals, will ensure continued system performance and extended service life. It is a part of scheduled maintenance services and will sae you the trouble of major repairs down the road.

Hello to all. This is my first review using YourMechanic or Your Mechanic depending on the spelling and grammar. I was looking at finding several quotes before I committed to the job(s). Having someone come to your home with all the required equipment and parts is a blessing. This first initial visit for YourMechanic/Your Mechanic was for two maintenance services: 1) a Power Steering Fluid service and 2) a Transmission Fluid Service. I already had gotten a quote from another company for about the same price who I have been to in the past but I just didn't initiate the travel to go to the shop. Having been able to talk to Anderson from the initial meeting and see what he completed for me at my home actually allows me to give YourMechanic/Your Mechanic a lot of respect for the business model and more business in the near future. In a normal shop setting, you don't get a lot of time to talk to the technician/mechanic. You get to ask questions to the technician/mechanic afterwards. Time is money so this is a great part of the service to see all of the parts that go into your vehicle and how the technician/mechanic completes the job. My appointment was for 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm and Anderson had enough time to answer whatever doubts I had about the process. He completed the job ahead of schedule so there was enough time to do clean up. With cars, there is always something to get fixed so I am definitely going to recommend this service to friends and neighbors who might be unable to get certain jobs completed due to life being busy. Having that convenience with someone coming to you creates a lot of stress less days and nights worrying if you might need a tow truck to bring your vehicle to a shop. I respect the work that Anderson did for me. I respect the trade a lot more. Working on cars/truck/vans, etc is not a clean job on most days. He had all the required tools to complete the job and he allowed me to follow along with what he was doing by observing from a distance with COVID-19 still being a serious problem for a lot of people. YourMechanic/Your Mechanic came through for me in a good way. It's a win-win for everybody. Thank you Anderson for allowing me to keep my minivan on the road for a little while longer.
