What is the Air Filter all about?

Your car takes in air and passes it into the engine through the air filter. (Some cars have more than one air filter.) The air filter takes out dust, leaves, and other debris from the air before passing it into the engine where it’s mixed with fuel. The combination of air and fuel is essential for the car to run. If the air filter is dirty or clogged, it will not pass enough air into the engine, causing all sorts of problems (car may not start, engine may not run smoothly, etc.). If you use a reusable air filter (K&N), please specify that in the appointment notes, as you may just need a cleaning instead of a replacement. Unless you bought K&N filter, your car has a regular filter.

Keep in mind:

  • Replacing an air filter is one of the most straightforward and affordable automotive repairs.
  • Air filters cannot be repaired, only replaced.

How it's done:

  • Remove and replace air filter.

Our recommendation:

A mechanic should inspect the air filter during every maintenance service (in cars where the filter is readily accessible).

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Air Filter?

  • Engine is running rough.
  • Engine may not run.
  • Low gas mileage.
  • Check Engine Light is on.

How important is this service?

A dirty air filter is unable to keep dirt, dust, and debris from entering your engine. When your air filter is dirty, your cylinders and oil will both be subject to contamination from dirt particles in the air, because they have no alternate method of filtering the air. This contamination causes wear and tear on your engine, and also reduces your gas mileage and emissions.

Chrysler Crossfire V6-3.2L Turbo - Transmission fluid is leaking - San Jose, California
Jason is hands-down the best SAE certified tech out there. His troubleshooting skills, patience, and experience are bar-none the best and I am a "car guy". He doesn't overlook anything, is meticulous as to how to eliminate both electrical and mechanical parts to get to the root of the problem, uses current technology well for aiding in the repair and goes above and beyond the call of duty to satisfy the customer. He repaired a Mercedes 722.6 5 speed automatic transmission in my 2005 Crossfire SRT6 and ensured that it operated correctly. The common problems were discussed ahead of time as both he and I did the research based on the speed-sensor codes and symptoms it was displaying. The "conductor plate" within the transmission body was suspected and confirmed as faulty through exterior testing. After replacement of this part containing the transmission speed sensor, the car ran fine again, and will be tested by me during the upcoming weeks. Two thumbs up for Jason. He's a valuable asset to YourMechanic.com and I will have him do other work on my other sports cars as he knows his stuff and has sports car experience, even with off-brands like the Mercedes clone Crossfire.

Chrysler Crossfire V6-3.2L - Car Battery Replacement - Portsmouth, Virginia
Very personable and prepared. Had every tool necessary to do the job, including a handy hood light for night time work. Quick and efficient. Victor was really good at explaining what he saw as future repair needs, beyond today’s scheduled battery replacement. Great guy with a can do attitude. Would absolutely recommend him to anyone and will use him in the future should we pursue further repairs. Great, seamless experience with Your Mechanic! Really liked the text updates as to when Victor was on his way, to his arrival, to the check out process. And the best part? We didn’t even have to leave home! Thank you Victor and Your Mechanic.
