How to Buy a Personalized License Plate in New Hampshire

A personalized license plate is a great way to add unique personalization to your vehicle. With a personalized plate, you can make your car a little more fun or a little more special. You can create a special message to support your favorite sports team or your alma mater, advertise your business, or show support for a charity or organization.

Ordering a New Hampshire license plate is easy, doesn’t take very long, and is also quite affordable. So if you’ve been looking for a fun way to make your car a little more “you,” a personalized license plate could be the perfect addition.

Part 1 of 3: Choose your license plate message

Step 1: Go to the New Hampshire license plate page. Visit the New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles license plate page.

Step 2: Select a special license plate design. Click on the link titled “Plate search.”

Select your vehicle type, then choose a license plate design.

  • Tip: If you would like to see what each license plate design looks like, click on the link titled “Plate types” on the license plate page.

Step 3: Select your personalized plate message. In the box titled “Enter plate request”, type in your preferred message.

You can use all letters and numbers, as well as the minus (-), plus (+), and ampersand (&) signs. Spaces cannot be used, and the letter “O” is interchangeable with the number “0”. Special characters cannot be used consecutively, and no more than two can be used.

Different plate designs have different character limits. The character limit for your chosen plate design will show up next to the plate message box.

  • Warning: Crude, offensive, or explicit license plate messages will not be accepted. The form may say that they are available, but the application will be rejected by the Division of Motor Vehicles.

Step 4: Check the availability of your license plate message. After writing your message, click the “Submit” button to see if the message is available.

If the plate is listed as unavailable, keep trying until you find one that works.

Part 2 of 3: Order your personalized license plates

Step 1: Download and print the personalized license plate application form. Click on the link titled “Application for vanity plates,” which can be found on the license plate page or on the check availability page.

Print the form. If you prefer, you can fill out the form on your computer before printing it.

Step 2: Fill out your personal and vehicle information on the form. Fill out the name of the registered owner of the vehicle, as well as their driver’s license, telephone, mailing address and email.

Fill out the vehicle information, which includes your type of vehicle as well as the current license plate.

  • Note: The person you list on the form must be the registered owner of the vehicle.

Step 3: Fill out your desired personalized license plate information. Select the license plate design that you chose, and then write down your preferred license plate message.

Give a short explanation for the meaning of your license plate message.

  • Tip: Be sure to give a thorough answer for your plate message explanation.

Step 4: Sign and date the form.

Step 5: Mail your application to the Division of Motor Vehicles. Put your completed form in an envelope and send it to:

State of New Hampshire
Department of Safety
Division of Motor Vehicles
23 Hazen Drive
Concord, NH 03305

Part 3 of 3: Install your personalized license plates

Step 1: Receive notification from the Division of Motor Vehicles. This will let you know if your plate has been approved.

Step 2: Pay the personalized license plate fee. When you receive your notification, follow the included instructions to pay the fee.

  • Note: The personalized license plate fee is in addition to the standard license plate and registration fees and taxes. There is also a small fee for reflectorizing the plate.

Step 3: Receive your personalized license plates. After your payment has been received, your license plates will be mailed to you.

Step 4: Install your personalized license plates on your car. As soon as you receive your personalized plates in the mail, install them on both the front and back of your car.

If you do not feel comfortable installing the license plates by yourself, you can stop by any garage or mechanic shop and have them installed.

This is a good time to check your license plate light as well. If your license plate light is burned out, you need to hire a mechanic to come help you do the job.

It doesn’t take much work or time to get personalized New Hampshire license plates for your vehicle, and it can be a great way to make your car a little more fun, and a little more “you”. You’ll enjoy seeing your new plates each time you go to your car.
