Fuel Return Hose Replacement Service

What is the Fuel Return Hose all about?

On a carbureted engine, the fuel return hose serves a number of functions. First, it allows excess fuel to return to the tank instead of becoming over-pressurized. Second, it prevents vapor lock by allowing the fuel to circulate through the fuel pump as it cools, instead of vaporizing in the pump and the fuel lines. And finally, it helps reduce fuel pump line pressure, which can cause excessive wear on the fuel pump.

The fuel pump works to circulate gas in a constant loop to and from the tank, allowing the carburetor to take as much fuel as it needs. The whole system would fail if the fuel return hose stopped functioning.

Keep in mind:

  • Fuel return hose replacement is not part of your regular vehicle maintenance.
  • Cracks and abrasions can cause your fuel return hose to malfunction.

How it's done:

  • The vehicle's hood is opened and vehicle is supported on jack stands
  • The fuel tank lowered and the defective fuel return line removed
  • The new fuel return line is installed then fuel tank is re-installed
  • The hood manual support is removed and vehicle removed from jack stands
  • The repair is verified and the fuel lines are tested for leaks and proper operation

Our recommendation:

If fuel is not delivered properly to your carburetor, your vehicle will start with difficulty or not start at all. If you’re experiencing starting difficulties, one of our expert mechanics can diagnose the problem and replace a faulty fuel return hose if required.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Fuel Return Hose?

  • There is a gas smell but tank and lines are not leaking
  • Gas stain or puddle underneath the car but tank and lines are fine
  • Carburetor floods easily

How important is this service?

If you smell gas, you should have your vehicle inspected. A blocked or faulty fuel return hose could result in the ignition of leaking fuel and an engine fire. Have it replaced immediately.
