On a carbureted engine, the fuel return hose serves a number of functions. First, it allows excess fuel to return to the tank instead of becoming over-pressurized. Second, it prevents vapor lock by allowing the fuel to circulate through the fuel pump as it cools, instead of vaporizing in the pump and the fuel lines. And finally, it helps reduce fuel pump line pressure, which can cause excessive wear on the fuel pump.
The fuel pump works to circulate gas in a constant loop to and from the tank, allowing the carburetor to take as much fuel as it needs. The whole system would fail if the fuel return hose stopped functioning.
If fuel is not delivered properly to your carburetor, your vehicle will start with difficulty or not start at all. If you’re experiencing starting difficulties, one of our expert mechanics can diagnose the problem and replace a faulty fuel return hose if required.
If you smell gas, you should have your vehicle inspected. A blocked or faulty fuel return hose could result in the ignition of leaking fuel and an engine fire. Have it replaced immediately.
