Engine or Transmission Mount Replacement Service

What is the Engine Mount all about?

An engine mount, made of rubber and steel, has two purposes. One, it secures the engine and transmission to the frame of the car, and two, it absorbs the road shocks and engine vibrations so that the driver does not feel any engine movement. Transmission mounts secure the transmission.

Most cars have multiple engine and transmission mounts. If one of the mounts breaks, you will feel significant engine movement (vibrations and/or shaking).

Engine Mount

Keep in mind:

  • Do not drive your car for too long with broken engine or transmission mounts. It can cause severe damage to the axle shafts and transmission.
  • Some engine mounts contain oil that may leak if a mount is damaged.

How it's done:

  • Identify the broken mount.
  • Remove and replace the mount.

Our recommendation:

Whenever you notice your engine behaving oddly, you should schedule an inspection. Engine mounts are not typically checked during general maintenance, but they’ll be one of the first things checked if you report the symptoms mentioned here. As soon as you notice your engine vibrating, feeling clunky, or being noisy, schedule an inspection.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Engine Mount?

  • Engine or transmission movement, with bumping or clunking noises.
  • Loud noise when you put the car in gear.
  • Vibration when accelerating or driving uphill.
  • You will feel a movement in the engine compartment when driving the car.
  • Oil leaking from damaged mount (only in case of fluid filled mounts).

How important is this service?

Engine mounts hold your engine and transmission in place. The mounts absorb the shocks of the road and the vibration of the engine and transmission, and keep these two elements securely in place. When a mount brakes, the engine and transmission are less secure, and they’re subject to a higher amount of vibration and shock. This can cause damage to any number of vehicle components, and will also make your ride much rougher.

Second job from your mechanic and again Clint was my mechanic. The man is quick, professional & very knowledgeable. He took time to show me the parts & explain their individual functions as well as why they were needed. This is the only mechanic to EVER do this at my request without complaint. I so appreciate being treated as an equal instead of a "dumb female" customer that's just a pain in the butt. Thank you again for having such a talented person on staff. I have already recommended your service to several friends & will continue to do so. Thanks again.

Volvo 245 - Car is not starting - San Diego, California
First off, I do feel uncomfortable leaving a 3 star review as I'm certain Tabitha is an expert in her field and my experience may've been a fluke. The reason I'm leaving a 3 star is that the initial diagnostic did not find all the causes associated with my car's problem which brings me to question if the initial repair was in fact necessary. Also, the initial repair left me with a non functioning gas gauge. I assure the readers it did function prior. The good is the no fee for the return warranty visit that was scheduled promptly and the diagnosis with for a $40 relay that I was able to purchase and replace on my own. I'm still uncertain of the exact condition of the in tank fuel pump prior to repair as well the remainder of the fuel sending unit as my gas gauge worked prior, so I assume the float was clipped properly to the variable resistors control arm or it could have be deteriorating and the removal of the fuel sending unit release it from the end of the control arm. No bad feelings, and I hope this review is beneficial. Take care, everybody!
