What is the Door Handle or Door Latch all about?

The car has at least two door handles per door: one on the inside and another on the outside. Due to frequent use, they will eventually break down and could need repair. Sometimes the handle itself is fine, but there is a problem with the door latch assembly that prevents the door from shutting and locking properly.

Keep in mind:

  • Sometimes the visible part of the door handle needs to be replaced, and sometimes the mechanism hidden inside the door needs to be replaced.
  • If the exterior door handle doesn’t work, there’s a good chance that the interior door handle is also faulty.
  • If physical damage (such as an accident) has caused the door handle to break, there may also be damage to the door lock switch or door lock actuator.

How it's done:

  • Remove the door panel to gain access.
  • Remove and replace the broken door handle.
  • Inspect door latch and replace if not working.
  • Check door for proper operation.
  • Reinstall door panel.

As soon as you notice that your door is having difficulty opening, you should schedule an inspection. If your exterior door handle stops working entirely, stop trying to use it: trying to force the door can cause further damage. If you notice that your exterior door handle is feeling fragile, you should also schedule an inspection.

I just bought a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0 with 72,000 miles for $3,000 in total the car was completely fine when I had first gotten it and now that it's a month and a half later some significant challenges have come up the check engine light and check airbag light have come on the transmission only had second gear it's automatic and it only has second gear the electrical system is messed up the windows don't go up and down the locks don't work certain parts of the car just from the age need to be updated but that's not the major component but now I'm having trouble with the transmission and pretty much I'm getting 22 mi for a half of a full tank of gas and I can no longer take it on the highway and there's no way of me checking the transmission fluid or to see what's going on with that to diagnose or assess it I can't afford to take that to Volkswagen and I do need your professional expertise and feedback please
