What are drum brakes all about?

In older vehicles (usually ones manufactured before 1999), the rear brakes are drum brakes. The drum is a large medal cylindrical housing with brake shoes attached to it. When you press on the brake pedal, brake fluid helps the brake shoe apply pressure to the brake drum, which slows down your vehicle. Over time, the brake drum will wear thin, as constant friction with the brake shoe wears the drum away. When this happens the drum brakes will need to be adjusted to keep them close to the shoe, so that braking is still efficient.

Keep in mind:

  • Some drum brakes systems adjust automatically.
  • When adjusting the drum brakes it’s important to check the wear and tear on both the drums and the brake shoes, to see when both will need to be replaced.

How it's done:

  • Adjust the rear drum brakes

Our recommendation:

Your entire braking system should be routinely serviced. Each component of your system, including the drum brakes, should be examined during tuneups and servicing, and you should schedule regular inspections for the braking system. The braking system is the most critical safety feature on your vehicle, so you should not postpone brake-related services.

What is a common symptom indicating you need to adjust the drum brakes?

  • Softer brake pedal

How important is this service?

Older cars rely on drum brakes for the rear wheels. Drum brakes are a large, metal cylindrical housing on each wheel that are necessary to help your vehicle slow down or stop. Attached to the drum brakes are the brake shoes. When you deploy the brake pedal, brake fluid runs to the brake shoes, and helps them apply pressure to the brake drums. The friction between the drums and the shoes slows down your vehicle. This constant friction makes the drum brakes thinner over time, as the surface layer of the drum keeps wearing off. As the drums become thinner, the space between them and the shoes grows. This distance means that the shoes do not come into as strong of contact with the drums as they normally do, and the braking system will be less efficient than normal.

Omar

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 V8-4.8L - Adjust Drum Brakes - Fort Lauderdale, Florida
I have owned a car for just about 25 years and for those same 25 years I have looked, unsuccessfully until today I might add, for a mechanic that I felt really cared about me, and now my family, and not just how much they could up-sell someone with very little knowledge of vehicles. After an awful week of rude and nasty mechanics trying to figure out how much they could charge my wife and I for repairs that we didn't even need, we began to feel like we would never be treated fairly by a mechanic because we didn't know enough about cars to question things we were being told. And then by some small miracle a friend told us about Omar from a company called Your Mechanic. I was extremely skeptical as one of our disasters earlier in the week was by another mechanic that was supposed to come to our house to do the repairs and instead decided to no call no show. But I was running out of options and time. So we scheduled an appointment for Omar through Your Mechanic and my wife and I cannot say enough good things about our incredible experience with Omar. He immediately reassured us that he would only be doing the work that needed to be done and we could expect the truck done in a few hours. I immediately felt all of the bad experiences from the previous week become a distant memory and this was all thanks to Omar and his incredible professionalism while speaking to us. I never once felt as if he looked down on us because of our lack of knowledge about cars. He went out of his way to make sure we not only understood everything but more importantly we were comfortable with his diagnosis and solutions. After we checked with him if he needed anything else from us he said no I have your phone number if I need anything I can call you otherwise I will let you know in a couple hours when I'm done. My wife and I then turned and began to head inside at which point I looked at her and said "unless we come out here and he is gone and the truck is in a bunch of pieces in the parking lot, then I am very confident we have finally found a trustworthy, honest, reliable and genuinely decent human being to be our families mechanic!" And to no surprise that is exactly what my wife and I are confident we finally found today after looking for 25 years. What some people think, and rightly so, is the hardest thing to find nowadays and that is a extremely knowledgeable, reliable, honest, trustworthy and genuinely a good human being to be their mechanic. When he looked at an estimate that we had received from a national chain he told us that we did not need to have the rear calipers replaced, as we were told by the chain, and that saved us another $150. So the national chain's initial estimate was right around $1500 and Your Mechanic's estimate was about half of that. Add to which Omar saved us the other $150 by letting us know the rear calipers didn't need to be replaced at this time because as he stated they still had a little meat on them so he took that off. How easy it would have been for Omar to leave that charge on their knowing full well we had already signed off on it because, once again, we know very little about cars. Needless to say, thanks to Omar we have found our families new mechanic. And he will be as long as we have cars and he is available. But I would imagine the more people that use him, the harder it is going to be to book him. Because everyone knows you cannot put a price tag on a damn good mechanic and that's exactly what we have found in Omar. Thank you Your Mechanic for sending us such an incredible representative of your company. You all should be very proud to have Omar on your team and representing your company the way he does. What a blessing he has been and will continue to be for the Zorovich family for many years to come. Along with ALL of our family, friends and colleagues...

The appt was 11 am. Bryant came at 5. I had to text to find out when he would come. He had parts issues but failed to communicate how late he would be. We only needed front disc pads. The rotors were not damaged but were replaced. This time although Bryant is very capable and I do not feel he meant to. We were overcharged and communication could have been much better.

Great service. Always willing to take the time to explain and show you the problem. You cannot get this kind of service at a shop and he does the work at your house! No more shuttling cars to shops and having to wait or have a friend pick you up and take you back to get your car.
