What is the Ball Joint Front all about?

Ball joints are a part of your vehicle's suspension system that connect the steering knuckles to the control arms. A ball joint is essentially a flexible ball and socket that allows the suspension to move and, at the same time, the wheels to steer. Cars and trucks will have multiple ball joint assemblies depending on their type of suspension system.

Like any other suspension component, ball joints will eventually wear out and become loose. Excessive play in the joint can affect wheel alignment and tire wear. Loose joints can also cause suspension noise (typically a "clunking" sound when going over a bump). If a ball joint fails, the suspension can collapse, causing a loss of control of the vehicle.

Keep in mind:

Depending on the suspension design, ball joints can be found either in the front or the rear. The vehicle may need to be taken to a shop for wheel alignment after this service. Mobile mechanics do not have the machinery to align wheels.

How it's done:

  • Remove the wheels.
  • Remove the control arm(s).
  • Remove and replace ball joints.
  • Check the entire suspension system for any problems.

How important is this service?

The ball joint connects the control arm to the steering knuckle. As the wheels – and therefore the steering knuckles – move, the ball joints help the suspension – and therefore the control arm – stay steady. And as the suspension moves, the ball joints help the wheels steer. When the ball joints fail, the suspension and wheels have a hard time working independent of each other. This puts unnecessary strain on each component, which can alter wheel alignment and severely damage the suspension.

Mike was very professional and was knowledgeable about VW/AUDI. I have nothing but compliments regarding the mechanic as he was knowledgeable, professional and likable. My only complaint is that the mechanic did not have access to the tools needed to fix the problem. YourMechanic advertises "Audi service by top rated Audi mechanics at the convenience of your home or office" so I assumed they would be equipped with the ECU tool as that is used to troubleshoot and manage the multiple systems that make up the car. The mechanic confirmed the diagnosis (Steering needing calibrated) by looking up the same code that I looked up when reporting the issue. He did offer insight as to the probable cause which was the recent replacement of the ABS/ESP controller requiring the steering be calibrated. Your Mechanic's recommendation was to take it to an Audi dealer. I'll end up at Kwik Kar or one of the independent VW/Audi shops that have the necessary VCDS tool. Summary: Knowledgeable mechanic explained why the warning light was on but was not equipped with the necessary tools to fix it. I can see using YourMechanic for items like fluid changes and brake pad replacement but can not see using them for anything requiring troubleshooting as so much requires the mechanic to interface with the ECU and connected subsystems.
