Engine Side Cover Gaskets Replacement Service

What is the Engine Side Cover Gaskets all about?

The side engine cover, more commonly known as valve cover, is a metal protective cover on the top of the engine that covers the valve rocker arms and lifters. The valve cover is sealed to the cylinder head with a gasket that is usually made of reinforced rubber or cork. It is bolted down along its perimeter, and torqued to a manufacturer’s specifications. If the valve cover gasket is cracked or blown out, oil will leak to the outside of the engine.

Keep in mind:

  • The main purpose of the side cover gasket is to protect against oil leaks.

Our recommendation:

A leaking valve cover gasket should be noticed during any vehicle service, including oil changes. If the valve cover gasket is noted to be leaking, have one of our expert mechanics replace it.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Engine Side Cover Gaskets?

  • Oil leaking on and under your engine

How important is this service?

A leaking valve cover gasket is little more than an annoyance unless the leak is large. A small leak can be left unrepaired as long as oil levels are closely monitored. If the leak is large or oil is contaminating other components, have the engine side cover gasket replaced.
