What is the Suspension Air Bag all about?

Suspension air bags are designed to keep your vehicle from swaying, sagging or otherwise delivering a rough ride when you have it loaded. By adding extra support to your current suspension, your truck or SUV should give you a much smoother ride, even with additional weight. Some upscale SUV’s have factory-installed suspension air bags that automatically level the load and ride height. They are controlled by suspension height sensors that provide information to the body control module, which directs the proper air pressure from a compressor to the air bag. If there is a leak in an air bag, or if your air bag pressure will not adjust, it may need to be replaced.

Keep in mind:

  • Except for some upscale vehicles, most trucks and SUVs don’t come with suspension air bags as factory components. If you didn’t add them on yourself, you probably don’t have them.
  • Incorrect tire pressure can mimic the symptoms of a weak suspension air bag.

How it's done:

  • The vehicle is lifted and supported on jack stands and the rear wheels are removed
  • The defective suspension air bag is removed
  • The new suspension air bag is installed
  • The tires are reinstalled and the vehicle is taken off the jack stands
  • The air suspension is activated and tested for proper operation

Our recommendation:

If your suspension is riding rough, it’s a good idea to have your suspension and suspension air bags looked at. Air bags are typically made of rubber and can be subject to environmental weathering. If you suspect your suspension air bag is leaking, have one of our expert mechanics diagnose them.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Suspension Air Bag?

  • Vehicle rides rough or is bouncy
  • When carrying a load, the suspension feels loose or wanders

How important is this service?

The suspension air bags in your vehicle aid in proper control and a comfortable ride. If your air bags are not working as designed, you may experience control problems when driving on the highway. Have the suspension air bags repaired as soon as you are able.

Plymouth Reliant L4-2.2L - Fuel Pump - San Francisco, California
David's first step was to diagnosis the reasons for the old car failing to start. He applied a systematic and thorough approach in order to reach a reasonable conclusion that he had found the faulty part. He was tireless and not a minute of the time he spent on the car was wasted. David then came back to 'finish the job." His analysis was a faulty fuel pump and/or filter. He brought the needed parts and after an arduous bout working under the car (rear has to be lifted), he tool out the old and put in the old..including new fuel hoses. Today..I stepped into the car which was parked outside all night and when I turned on the ignition switch, the engine started immediately. I have since used the car on several trips and I must say it sounds and feels like a new version of an old car. What's amazing, is that when I turned the ignition key on, the engine responds immedately and is ready to go. In the past, it stammered, sputtered, cranked until I finally gave up. So in looking back, to use an analogy, it needed a new "heart" for the old one was no long pumping. I hope this story gives you a decent picture of why I hold David and his work in such hi regard. I will call upon him again, especially with this old car, some time in the future.

Plymouth Voyager V6-3.0L - 50 Point Inspection - Pleasant Hill, California
This is the third time I have asked Gary out to help with one of my vehicles. He is not only a great mechanic but a genuinely good person. Honesty is something a little scarce these days. Most people just want someone they can trust to tell it like it is and know they aren't being fed a line of BS. Gary left the mainstream shops because of the unscrupulous things being done to unsuspecting clients. If you want the straight story ask for Gary. He won't let you down.
