What is the Door Lock Actuator all about?

A door lock actuator is the component in electronic door locks that is responsible for locking and unlocking the vehicle’s doors. When a button is pressed to lock or unlock a door, the door lock switch triggers the actuator. A small motor in the actuator then triggers a series of gears. The final gear is connected to a rack and pinion set of gears, which converts the rotational motion of the motor into the vertical motion necessary to lock or unlock the door.

Keep in mind:

Some modern vehicles have a complete door lock assembly which can’t be separated into individual components. These vehicles will need the entire assembly replaced, rather than just the actuator.

Our recommendation:

The door lock system shouldn’t be checked unless you notice that something is wrong. As soon as you notice your vehicle behave oddly when you lock or unlock the doors, schedule an inspection.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Door Lock Actuator?

  • Doors won’t lock.
  • Doors won’t unlock.
  • Doors will only lock or unlock sporadically.
  • Doors make an unusual noise while locking or unlocking.
  • Car alarm goes off randomly.

How important is this service?

A door lock actuator is responsible for locking and unlocking your doors. When the door lock switch is triggered, the actuator’s motor powers a set of gears that lock or unlock your door. When the actuator stops working, there is no communication between the door lock switch and the door locks, and you’ll be unable to lock or unlock the door.

Jeep Grand Cherokee V6-3.7L - Door Lock Actuator Replacement (Driver Side Front) - Milpitas, California
Honorio was great. He was on time and friendly. He does great work. My jeep needed the door actuator replaced. When I asked him question about other issues about the jeep he was very knowledgeable and helpful with his answers. If I ever need repairs with my Jeep will be asking for him to work on it. Thank you Honorio.

Jeep Grand Cherokee L6-4.0L - Door Lock Actuator Replacement (Driver Side Front) - Orlando, Florida
Brandon was terrific! Politely put up with my questions and when he was finished, had me get in and check out the repair work on the door (it locks by itself again now without scaring me by buzzing). I will tell as many people as I can about the yourmechanic.com website and recommend Brandon every chance I get. If there were more than 10 stars- Brandon would score the most available.
