What is the Tailgate Locking Assembly all about?

A tonneau cover can be installed to cover your possessions in the truck bed, and a tailgate locking assembly can be used to lock the tailgate closed. Manufacturers may use a manual key-operated lock, power locking tailgate, or no locking device at all. When a tailgate lock is in place, there are mechanical components that firmly latch the tailgate handle. When the tailgate locking assembly is faulty, the tailgate lock cylinder with either not turn, or will turn without changing the lock position. If a power tailgate locking assembly is faulty, pressing the lock or unlock function will not change the lock position either.

Keep in mind:

  • The tailgate locking assembly can be mechanically operated with a key, opened by pushing a button on the car’s inside, or accessed remotely by an incorporated electronic actuator.

How it's done:

  • The tailgate is lifted and inside cover is removed for access
  • The defective tailgate locking assembly is removed
  • The new tailgate locking assembly is installed
  • The tailgate inside cover is reinstalled
  • The rear tailgate is opened and closed to check locking assembly operation

Our recommendation:

Mechanical or key-operated tailgate locks can and should be lubricated every service interval to prevent corrosion and seizing. The lock should last the lifetime of your vehicle if properly lubricated and cleaned. If your liftgate locking assembly is not working as it should, have one of our expert mechanics inspect and repair it.

What common symptoms indicate you may need to replace the Tailgate Locking Assembly?

  • Tailgate lock cylinder will not turn
  • Tailgate lock does not latch in place when the cylinder is locked
  • Power lock control for the tailgate makes a buzzing sound but doesn’t lock (or unlock) the latch

How important is this service?

As it is not a critical component to your vehicle’s operation, the tailgate locking assembly does not have to be repaired until you are prepared to do it. The contents of your truck box will not be secured until it is fixed.

Misfiring cylinder

Hi there. There are a couple of different reasons why a single cylinder would be misfiring. A common issue would be a lack of continuity throughout your spark plug coil, wire, and plug. Another problem you may be having is...

Hi, I have an M156 engine that me and my friend took apart replaced the faulty cylinder headbolts and other gaskets and now that we've put everything back together the oil is mixing with the [coolant](/topics-coolant-mercedes/) and producing chocolate milkshake kind of fluid. When we pour approximately 1 liter or more of water into the coolant holder thingy (forgot the name) it pours out the oil pan in the bottom after 10 or 20 seconds. We've tried to narrow down the problem and found out that it is probably from the water pump entry. We disconnected the hose that goes into the thermostat and it still leaks but when we remove the water pump hose from the radiator it doesn't leak. We took out the water pump and it looks fine and also has a new gasket and when we pour water right into the water pump opening it comes right back out and doesn't go in, so it looks like a mystery to use but maybe someone more experienced can help us out.

It's stalling in the cold. Started stalling at before 50 degrees F. Now it's stalling if the temp even gets below 70. It's also throwing a 171 lean code when this started. Idles rough when cold and the stabilitrak service light is coming on with a check [engine](/topics-engine-chevy/) light when it tries to stall. Giving it a little gas keeps it from stalling out. I also think I smell a bit of burning plastic under the hood but I can't tell from where and I don't see anything. When it's above 70 it idles and runs great.

How can we help?

Our service team is available 7 days a week, Monday - Friday from 6 AM to 5 PM PST, Saturday - Sunday 7 AM - 4 PM PST.
