Musawir Shah is the VP of Engineering & Data at YourMechanic. Musawir has a PhD in computer science and worked for several years at NVIDIA. He was the first person to be hired by the company and has led the Engineering team for four years.

Hi, Musawir! Can you tell us more about what you do at YourMechanic?

My main function at YourMechanic is as a systems architect: I ensure that engineering solutions are built in a sound and scalable way. I figure out where all the pieces are going to fit before - and while - they’re built. I’m still very hands on and program but my passion is inspiring people to experiment and explore new technologies. We view ourselves primarily as a technology company, and as such strive to keep abreast with the latest developments and not let our tech stack stagnate.

Why did you join YourMechanic?

I joined YourMechanic because I was instantly intrigued by the co-founders’ idea to revamp the entire car repair business. I knew the role would be a huge opportunity to create something really revolutionary. Another important factor was the co-founder/CTO, Dongyi. I had worked on his team at NVIDIA, where he was known as an exceptional engineer. I viewed him as my mentor and jumped at the opportunity of working with him again.

What keeps you motivated?

In an industry that has been mostly left untouched by technological innovation, there are lots of opportunities to truly disrupt a massive market by being the first to utilize smart software and hardware solutions. This gives me endless excitement. I’m passionate about the vision behind YourMechanic, which gets reaffirmed on a daily basis. Knowing how we’re making people’s lives easier incentivizes me when I face the next challenge.

What was your first car?

1992 Honda Civic.

What’s your dream car?

Audi R8.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

I love spending time with my wife, reading, and playing video games.
