Q: What is a wishbone suspension?

asked by on November 17, 2015

What is a "wishbone" or "double wishbone" suspension?

A double wishbone suspension is an independent suspension design using two wishbone-shaped arms to locate the wheel. It’s also known as an upper and lower A-suspension. The wide end of the wishbones is mounted to the chassis of the car at two points which allow the arm to move up and down providing suspension travel. The small ends have the steering knuckle or wheel carrier fastened between the two arms, and the shock absorber and coil spring mount to the wishbones to control vertical movement. The double wishbone system requires the least compromise when engineering for tire and vehicle control, but also requires the most space for components. Because of the space requirements, it’s typically used only on front suspensions where trunk space is a consideration, and more often in the rear suspension of sports and high performance cars where cargo capacity takes a secondary role.

The symptoms you described lead me to believe that you have a fuel delivery-related problem. I suggest that you check for fuel pressure at the fuel rail. If pressure is within factory specifications, I would then do a fuel flow...
There's a hose under the top radiator hose that seems to be leaking antifreeze. What hose is that and is it an easy fix?
Hi there. Usually the hose that's directly under the top radiator hose is a return surge tank hose (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-surge-tank-hose); typically coming from the radiator overflow coolant reservoir. Since winter is coming around soon, the best way to diagnose a coolant...

why is all of a sudden the power steering keeps leaking after being fixed? it happening again (4th time) causing PS failure.
Hi there. Have any other leaks been identified? Has the same part failed? If the hose is repeatedly failing, I would suggest using a factory part. Were the o rings/gaskets replaced that pertain to the hose? Has the steering system...
My car is leaking engine oil from under the car in a mass amount what could be causing this to happen?
The lower oil pan is an engine component that is close to the road and thus, if impacted, could be one possible leak point. Road debris impacting the oil pan can cause it to split, tear, or crack. Oil pans...

Hi Varun. Thanks for submitting your question this morning. Usually, when you use a manual key to unlock a door, it will only unlock that individual door. I'm not 100% sure that unlocking all doors is a feature of this...
