Q: What happens when a timing chain breaks?

asked by on January 16, 2017

Timing chain replacement is scheduled for next week on the VW Passat my daughter drives. What engine damage can occur if the timing chain breaks before it is replaced?

My car has 124 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hi there. The engine in your vehicle is known as a interference engine. This means that if the timing chain was to break off, then the pistons will come in contact with the cylinder head valves and either bend them or break them off. At highway speeds and the rpm’s being high will cause more damage then at lower speed and lower rpm’s. I recommend not driving the vehicle until the timing chain is replaced.

The first thing to do is to remove all the spark plugs (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/spark-plugs-replacement), air filter (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/air-filter-replacement), and check the engine oil to see if it has not been overfilled. Then turn over the motor to see if it will turn....

There are many potential causes for this noise but the most likely are a belt idler, tensioner, alternator (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/alternator-replacement), water pump (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/water-pump-replacement), AC compressor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/ac-compressor-replacement), timing...

I started my car and turn on AC but it would not start.
It will take a bit of deeper diagnosis to tell what is going on with the vehicle as it seems you have multiple concerns going on. An air conditioning system with a low refrigerant charge may not turn on because...
