Q: Strange grinding sound from front end

asked by on September 07, 2016

I was pulling into a parking space that had a curb to the right and I pulled up onto the curb to fit. When I pulled back out, I heard a loud thud from under the area the curb was. I continued and drove off... since then, the car is making a strange grinding/growling sound when driving (forward mostly) I did a quick peek under the car and didn't see anything obvious. Also, when the car is in park and I start it, it sounds fine... however..if I put the car in drive with the brake pressed, it makes a rumbling/growling sound (not moving) Any ideas on what to look for would be helpful... thanks!

My car has 122000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

You may have bent something on that side, notably a suspension part, HOWEVER the fact that you have the noise with the car stationary with the brakes applied is NOT consistent with damage to a suspension part. The car would have to be placed on a lift and/or with the wheel/tire removed to see if anything came in contact with something like a concrete curb. If the car is making the noise while NOT moving it could be something like the torque converter housing was hit, which damages the torque converter. It depends on how hard you hit it. YourMechanic would have to thoroughly look at that part of the undercarriage and look for the telltale signs of an impact.

Clutch pedal sticking
I have seen this problem before. Since the issue seems to be temperature sensitive, or prevalent during times of heavy use like traffic, it might be the fluid in your clutch master cylinder is getting too hot. The fluid in...

My car is sluggish and struggles going uphill.
Hello. If the engine revs up and the vehicle is not responding then it is usually caused by a slipping transmission (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/is-it-safe-to-drive-with-a-slipping-transmission). If it is just a power loss, then the issue may be a bad catalytic converter (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-catalytic-converter) clogging...

No, absolutely not. The good news is that this is such an obvious problem, I can tell you with a high degree of certainty that you have a cracked or otherwise failed distributer cap (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/distributor-rotor-and-cap-replacement). Replace that cap and you...

I just had a water pump put in 2 weeks ago, now the fan belt is squealing and the water gauge is jumping around.
The fan belt squealing may simply be related to the belt just needing to be adjusted or lubed with some belt dressing. Your temperature gauge jumping around is a cause for concern and may or may not be related to...
