Q: My brakes hiss back at me

asked by on January 12, 2017

When i step on my brakes there stiff and hiss back at me they work still but not like they use to. I wanted to know if its my booster or my master cylinder, Ive also bleeded my brakes 2 times with no difference instead a bit stiffer than before. The first time they were VERY soft they almost didnt work. Now When it hisses it sounds like the dash but when you get out i cant determind if its the booster or master cylinder. Thank You.

My car has 258006 miles. I rebuilt my engine at 242,000 miles. My car has an automatic transmission.

Brake Pedal is hard to push Inspection $94.99 - $114.99 Get a Quote

That hiss you hear is a vacuum leak. That leads to the hard brake pedal. Power brakes rely on vacuum to make braking easier. The vacuum leak has reduced vacuum within the brake booster and is making the brake pedal hard - similar to older cars without power brakes basically. It may also be effecting your engine performance and economy. The leak can be the brake booster housing itself, or the vacuum connection to it. Have a certified technician look into the hard brake pedal as soon as possible.

Timing chain replacement on a 1999 Chevrolet Lumina
Don't waste your time this early. Timing chains are made of metal. If it's a rubber timing chain, then yes, you may want to change it. But the metal timing chain isn't worth it if it's only at 68,000 miles....

It is possible that you have an ignition coil (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/ignition-coil-replacement) going bad. Once heat builds up, resistance in the ignition coils increase. If you have a weak coil, it will sometimes cause a misfire when it is hot. The misfires...
My automatic shifter will vibrate hard when I'm going over 80 and my car also would shake a bit
Hi there. Not sure what roads you can travel over 80mph but several things may cause this issue. One possibility is having broken or sagging transmission/engine mounts (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/engine-mount-replacement). Another possibility is a driveline vibration caused by worn CV joints (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/axle-cv-shaft-assembly-replacement)...

Misfiring and jerking when accelerating.
The jerking reaction you are experiencing may be related to a dirty or failing mass air flow sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/mass-airflow-sensor-replacement). This is a component that measures the air intake as it enters the intake of the engine reading and relaying this...
I have a leaking power steering hose according to my dealership, they said it would take 5 hours to repair and cost $843.00, $800
Hi there. It would probably benefit you to obtain a second opinion. Although the power steering system can take time to prime and replace a hose, that estimate of labor is rather high; but expected by a dealership. If you'd...
