Q: My 1996 Honda civic won't start

asked by on February 28, 2017

I drove to a Gas Station to use the ATM, car was fine. Walked out of the store and started my car, then drove it to a pump so I could clean my windshield. When I got back in the car it started right up no problem but immediately started sputtering and then died. I let it sit for a minute then proceeded to try and start it again but it wouldn't start. The engine will turn over just fine but will not fire. I've done as much research that I can online but haven't had any success and I am certainly not a mechanic. I bought a new main relay switch 2 days ago and installed it but it did not fix the problem so now I'm out of ideas. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. *just for reference - the night before this incident happened, I was trying to fix my low headlight issue by removing the ground wires and bolts under the hood, scraping the location with a wire brush and put it all back together. (didn't work either lol). Not sure if that effected the car not starting

My car has 240000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hi there. It is very possible that during your under the hood ground wire procedure, the connection was not correctly completed; which can cause additional electrical systems to appear to be faulty. In general, when a car doesn’t start, it’s due to the battery being dead, battery cables being damaged or corroded, the ignition cylinder or relay being damaged, the starter relay or starter being faulty or an ignition or fuel system component requiring replacement. It might be a good idea for you to have a professional mobile mechanic come to your location and complete a car is hard to start inspection before trying to chase parts. It’ll save you a lot of time, money and frustration.

Car idles high and then low, and then becomes a 30 second cycle.
Hello. A few things I would check are the throttle body (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-throttle-body), the idle air control valve (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-idle-control-valve), and the vacuum hoses. A dirty throttle body or idle air control valve can cause the idle to fluctuate. I would also...

There is a BMW Technical Service Bulletin (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-to-use-a-technical-service-bulletin-tsb-to-diagnose-and-repair-a-car-by-valerie-johnston) (BMW SIB 11.09.07 (http://www.quirkyuncle.com/2013/04/12/diy-quieting-the-infamous-bmw-lifter-tick/)) that addresses the click/clack noises you mention. Chirping in motor. Not a pulley or belt. Took the belt off and still squeals.
Hi, thanks for writing in. It is likely that an engine overhaul or replacement would be necessary if the engine is making the same noise that a bad serpentine belt would make. This could be piston rings scratching against the...
Car won't start after adding oil to I added oil drove for like 3 blocks and it died now it just turns over but will not start
Hello. The oil light is telling you the vehicle has low oil pressure (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/oil-pressure-light-is-on-inspection). How low was the oil when you had to add it? If you have not check it since it stalled you should do that first. If...
My car overheated and now will not start. I believe I have a water pump issue and possibly a blown gasket.
A faulty water pump will not cause a failure to start. If the water pump is not working, all that will happen is after you start the car, the engine will overheat. If the head gasket has failed and coolant...
What color is engine oil
Hi there. Typically, motor oil is a light syrup color before it is poured into an engine. As the engine runs, carbon deposits from burned fuel become infused inside the oil particles, which causes the oil to darken to a...
My AC only blows hot air in my car. My car was idle for 30 min. Then the ac started blowing hot and then had a burning smell.
You should first verify the a/c system is full of refrigerant and then while running ac verify the compressor is turning on and engine cooling fan comes on also with it. If they do not then you may have a...
2009 Ford edge randomly overheats. Figured out cooling fan isn't working. Replaced and it is still not working. What next?
Hi Amber. It's quite possible that while jump starting the vehicle, an electrical relay may have been damaged. The first thing I would check are the electrical relays and fuses that power the radiator fans to see if they are...
Our 2000 dodge durango tries to turn over, but won't start. We already replaced coils and spark plugs
The blinker malfunction is probably a coincidence. High fuel consumption could be related to the no start issue, particularly if faulty engine management controls, or sensors, are at issue. Basically, inasmuch as the car will just flat out not start...
