Q: Misfire

asked by on October 15, 2016

My rpm gauge bounces around, doesn't rev when it does, it just bounces. Have a slight popping noise when idle or driving. Popps more when fast exceleration. Not so bad on highway. Compression test is good. I have changed plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, idle air control valve. Still have problem. What would be more likely, map sensor or injectors?

My car has 233000 miles.
My car has a manual transmission.

Hi there. From the description you have given, your vehicle has a combination of problems. The erratic tachometer/rpm gauge could be at fault. The tachometer signal from the ignition module could be erratic and may also be the cause of your vehicle’s drivability issue. The popping noise has me concerned. Even though the compression test has passed. There is a possibility, an exhaust valve is not opening properly (ie; a worn camshaft lobe), pushing exhaust gas back into the intake manifold. This popping noise from the engine sounds like a popcorn machine. I recommend your vehicle’s problems be inspected and diagnosed by a certified technician from YourMechanic.

What causes the engine to run rough and the engine to die when the accelerator is pressed?

Why are my wipers going off when I turn the turn signals on?

Wouldn't start, just cranks. It's been happening since front end was damaged. Everything was fixed from the accident, what could it be?
Hi there. Check the airbag sensor in the front end of the vehicle. Since the airbag deployed when you hit a deer, the airbag sensor had to be compressed to make this occur. Make sure that the battery is disconnected...
Transmission swap 1997 Ford F150

Car revs up but does not drive faster than 40 mph on a flat road.
Hi there. For the engine revving up and the vehicle slowing down, the transmission could be slipping. Check the transmission fluid and see if its full and red in color. If the fluid is full, then the transmission could be...
My oil pressure is low light came on
The oil pressure light will usually come on when a few things could be happening. Either the motor is in fact low on oil, the oil pump could be failing or the oil pressure sending unit (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/oil-pressure-sensor-replacement) is not working...
Is there vibrations and humming that gets louder when speed is increased then stops when vehicle stops a wheel bearing problem
From what you describe it is the front wheel bearings in the front hubs that need replaced. You should also check the tires for uneven wear and need for tire rotation or alignment issues causing uneven tire wear.
