Q: Key not turning in ignition

asked by on February 10, 2016

The key will not turn in the ignition. I have tried turning the steering wheel, but it will not budge.

Hi there. This problem is caused by a lack of mobility in your ignition cylinder. The bumps on your key depress a series of channels in the cylinder in the correct combination of order for it to release it’s locking mechanism. If one of these channels is not depressed, the cylinder will not allow you to turn the key. A replacement of the ignition cylinder would be the solution to your problem. Have a certified mechanic install a new ignition cylinder for you.

Is a no crank situation due to faulty neutral safety switch?
Hi, thanks for writing in. Yes. Your car could have a bad neutral safety start switch (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/neutral-safety-switch-replacement) but also by what you are saying it could be your starter solenoid. I can't find a specific place of where your neutral...
Floods bad when cold runs great when warms up
Hi. This problem is most likely caused by a faulty coolant temperature sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/coolant-temperature-switch-sensor-replacement), which is sending a signal to engine management that it is colder than it actually is. This causes engine management to inject more fuel than is...

Hi - most likely the reverse light switch (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-long-does-a-backup-light-switch-last) is working erratically. It is mounted on the gearbox, and is subject to vibration as well as oil on the switch contacts. I recommend a reverse light switch replacement (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/backup-light-switch-replacement) by...
took car for oil change, after driving home abs light came on, took it back they said it was a cracked tone ring
Hello. I will be happy to help you. The oil change and the ABS tone ring are unrelated. I would not say suspicious unless they did a tire rotation. Doing a tire rotation would make it remotely possible that they...

My Interior light won't turn on like the gauges and radio screen.
The interior lights are on a timer in the vehicle. This timer is a Ballast resistor that keeps the lights on for a short period of time when the doors are shut. The resistor maybe shorting out causing the lights...
