2004 Grand Cherokee Laredo with 176k miles. Periodically shimmies, chugs and shakes when cranking. Takes a few minutes for it to adjust itself, then smooth sailing. Happens intermittently and nothing shows up on mechanic's scanner. Mechanic has cleaned injectors because it was doing a little skip when driving. Last April throttle position sensor and oxygen sensor were replaced and it's happened a few times after that. Mechanic's Assistant: Have you located all of the vehicle's oxygen sensors? Are the wires leading to and from each intact and in good shape? I'll have to ask mechanic. Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Grand Cherokee yourself? What have you tried so far? No. Local garage. Mechanic has cleaned injectors because it was doing a little skip when driving. Last April throttle position sensor and oxygen sensor were replaced and it's happened a few times after that. Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? IAC idle motor was replaced recently.

Thank you June. Based on my experience the most likely possible cause for this condition would be a faulty or weak [fuel pump](/topics-fuel-pump-jeep/), bad camshaft position sensor or crankshaft position sensor. Yes they can all go bad intermittently and not even set a code in the computer which would cause the check engine light to come on. This is very common. Yes you can check all of these using the proper equipment. Keep in mind these would need to be tested when the problem acts up. They should be done by a professional mechanic with the appropriate tools. A normal diagnostic charge for this test or check would be approximately $75-$100 depending on the shop. I'm glad I can help. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks and have a great day!

I have highly suspected fuel pump as has garage owner but it hasn't done it with them even though they've driven the car back & forth home several times (with my permission--we live in small community). Guess I'll wait until it totally fails.

Sounds good. If you wait until the fuel pump fails you may have to pay a tow bill not to mention you could get stranded somewhere. Just keep that in mind.

I have AAA. Thanks for help today!

Timing chain misaligned

2004 Honda Civic starts but won't run.
You should have the computer checked for failure codes first and see if the camshaft or crank sensors are bad. Then have fuel pressure checked to see if pressure is too low.
