Q: I can't unlock my car on the driver side

asked by on November 11, 2016

I can't use my key to unlock my car on the driver side. It does open from the inside. My dad disarm my car alarm and he said that the alarm was not allowing me to use my key. However arming it again I still was not able to unlock my car. How do I unlock my car?
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hi there. The alarm should not affect the use of the key to unlock and lock the driver’s door. The linkage from the door lock cylinder to the door latch assembly must be disconnected. A fairly common failure, is the plastic retaining clip for the linkage rod has broken. In order to diagnose this problem, the inner door panel will have to be removed for inspection and repair. I recommend having your vehicle’s key won’t unlock the driver’s door be diagnosed and repaired by a certified technician, such as one from YourMechanic.

AC only blows cold when driving vs idling
Based on your description, it sounds like the radiator and A/C condenser cooling fan (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-cooling-radiator-fan-motor) is not coming on. When you are driving down the road over 35 -40 mph, there is enough air flow through both the A/C condenser...

Depending on the circumstances, it may in fact be in "fail-safe" mode. When this happens you will normally also have a Check Engine Light (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/check-engine-light-is-on-inspection) on which will usually cause fault codes to be registered in the ECU. When the...

The OBD-II Error code P0720 (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/p0720-obd-ii-trouble-code-output-speed-sensor-circuit-malfunction-by-brady-klopfer) indicates that a transmission speed sensor is faulty or receiving faulty data; which can cause your speedometer to not function. In most cases, this is more of an inconvenience, however, the speed...

P0420 bad under body catalytic converter 2003 Nissan Altima
Hi there - you are correct that there are 2 catalytic converters (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/catalytic-converter-replacement) on your vehicle; one (sometimes called a pre-catalyst) that is part of the exhaust manifold, and a 2nd converter further "downstream" in the exhuast system. It is...
