Q: Engine trouble

asked by on October 14, 2016

Try again lol, my partner has a vauxhall vectra petrol 2000 model 2.2, He ran it out of petrol and oil?? The engine is rattling like crazy after putting a can of fuel in, also put some oil in and when trying to start it the battery blew and smoke appeared 1st off and then just rattles very loudly, seems to be coming from the back and under the engine... doesn't seem to be turning over or make the usual sound when battery is low.. have tried jump and bump starting niether have worked. the lights all work but thats volt not amp hehe Also when you turn the key, you can here a clicking sound coming from the engine before it is turned completely. Could it be the starter motor that was changed year and half ago or is it dead lol please help many thanks :) Jo
My car has a manual transmission.

First thing to do is to get the oil level back up to where it’s supposed to be, and keep track of how much it takes to do so. If you have to add more than half the oil change amount to get it back to the correct level, you have probably done damage to the rod bearing and crankshaft bearings, and it’s possible the piston rings have had a minor "seizing" event in the cylinders. That would account for higher load then usual on the starter, as well as all the rattling coming out of the engine.

The clicking sound on "start" now is the starter solenoid - either from a weak battery, weak current to the starter, or burned solenoid contacts.

To avoid any unnecessary repairs, I would recommend having a certified technician, such as one from Your mechanic, perform both an inspection of your starting issue and engine noise to diagnoses these problems, get an accurate assessment of damage and cost estimate for repairs. YourMechanic.com can dispatch a mobile, professional mechanic to your location for this repair.

Serpentine belt broke, replaced it but lost AC. It broke again 2 days later
It would've been helpful to know if the A/C was working fine or having a problem when the first belt broke. I suspect that the A/C pulley is binding, causing the second and first belt to break. If the A/C...
When A/C unit is off, vents still have air flow
This type of ventilation is typical on most cars. Try setting the controls to "Recirculate" mode and see if that helps. The Recirculation setting typically closes off the flow of outside air from entering the passenger compartment. At highway speeds,...
P0012 and P0299. Can't get power when I accelerate and rpms goes high when the gears kick in.
Hello and thanks for contacting Your Mechanic. The code P0012 (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/p0012-obd-ii-trouble-code-camshaft-position-a-timing-over-retarded-bank-1-by-jay-safford) means that the camshaft timing sensor is reading the camshaft is retarded. The code P0299 (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/p0299-obd-ii-trouble-code-turbo-supercharger-underboost-condition-by-spencer-clayton) means that the turbo has excessive low output. Electronic throttle control light and dead battery? 08 Dodge Avenger SXT
Hey there. The only way to determine if the battery could be a cause (or part of the cause) of the engine stalling is to test it. Typically, a "load test" (very standard and reliable) would be applied to the...
Trouble starting car when cold
The starting (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/car-is-not-starting-inspection) issues scream timing. The typical causes that set these codes are the cam (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/camshaft-position-sensor-replacement) and crank position sensors (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/crankshaft-position-sensor-replacement). The only option you have not tried to my knowledge is the camshaft position sensor. I would start...
purchase a used certified car?
Both engines that were used in the 2016 Tuscon were equipped with maintenance-free silent timing chain systems. Consequently, there is no recommended replacement (mileage) interval and, indeed, the timing chain could outlast the car unless the engine is abused. As...

Hi, my Toyota fortuner 2010 is vibrating soon after reaching speed of 100km/h. Secondly, it is also when idle with start engine.
Shaking or vibration (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/engine-is-shaking-pulsating-or-vibrating-inspection) may be caused by many different things such as faulty spark plugs, poor fuel pressure or misfires. Other things such as a faulty idle air control valve (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/idle-control-valve-replacement) may cause the engine idle to drop below...
I replaced thermostat and thermostat sensor hose collapsed and I just changed the upper radiator hoses but haven’t tested it if it
