Q: Door lock problems

asked by on February 23, 2017

I only use a key to unlock the car. No remote When I unlock my car from the driver's door it usally unlocks the whole car. However the last few days if the car is locked and sits for at least an hour and I try to unlock the car, it only unlocks the driver door and wont unlock the others. If I lock it and unlock the drivers door within a short amount of time it unlocks all the doors. I can unlock all the doors from the drivers side switch on the door pannel.

What has caused this change and how would I go about fixing it.

My car has 25000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Hi there. There is a resistor for the door locks that keep a voltage on the driver door lock cylinder to activate the secondary door locks electronically. If the resistor is leaking (losing power) it tends to cause the door locks to not work. You can try unlocking the driver door, then open the driver door and use the key to unlock the other doors. This will supply power directly to the driver door lock cylinder and bypass the resistor. If the other doors unlock, then the resistor needs replaced. If the doors do not unlock with the key and the driver door open, then the door lock cylinder on the driver door will need replaced. If you need further assistance with your doors not unlocking when turning the key twice, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

Airmatic system not rising
Issues with this system are not common. The system has a set of bags that get filled with air to level the car when the sensors determine it is riding low. If the pump fails or the bags themselves develop...
Loud noise from car while driving slow
The fact that it is speed related leads me to think it is somehow related to the tire area. Calipers are what actually apply the brakes on the car when you step on the pedal. If one of the caliper...
My car makes a whirring noise and the check engine light is on with codes P0741 and P0700
The noise you are hearing is the transmission is having problems internally with the torque convertor clutch and valve body. The code P0741 has a long list of possible problems (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/p0741-obd-ii-trouble-code-torque-converter-clutch-circuit-performance-or-stuck-off-by-jamahl-walker) all pertaining with the torque convertor and valve body...
My abs light came on,brake pedal goes to floor but seems like only front is grabbing
Hello. If you are losing brake fluid, then there is a leak somewhere. Look for wet areas indicating where the leak may be. You may have blown a wheel cylinder (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/brake-wheel-cylinder-replacement) of a brake line (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/brake-hose-replacement) somewhere on the truck....
My car takes a long time to start
Hi there. From the description you have provided, I don't believe a bad fuel rail sensor could cause the ECM (electronic control module)/PCM (powertrain control module) to set a P0335. The crankshaft position sensor (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/crankshaft-position-sensor-replacement) could set the P0335 and...
It has a service engine soon light and i dont know what it means?
The service engine soon light (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/check-engine-light-is-on-inspection) inspection would be needed by a mechanic like one from YourMechanic to find out why the light came on. The light is only and indicator that the computer in the car has detected a...
I need help with my fuel tank.
Replacement of the fuel tank involves more than just the tank as the fuel pump has to be carried over from the old tank to the new and there are high pressure and EVAP system connections that must be made....
No reverse and will not down shift.
This may be a sign of low transmission fluid (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/transmission-fluid-service) or a faulty transmission control solenoid. As you know, automatic transmissions use pressurized hydraulic fluid to change gears. Every time a gear change is required, the car's computer activates a...
Brake rotors
What you are describing is a sign of warped brake rotors. As you may know, when you press on your brake pedal, this activates a hydraulic pressure which forces small pistons inside your brake calipers (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/brake-pads-replacement) to push the brake...
