I just bought a 05 Impala v6 automatic. It's very used, and when I first started driving it, I did notice that the shifting felt like it was slipping. Also, the gear shirt bar that moves the lever is in bad shape. It was having a difficult time getting into 4th gear on the freeway drive home, so I used cruise control, thinking that would take some pressure off of the transmission. I don't know if that's relevant, just saying everything. I got off the freeway and stopped at a light . The car wouldn't move. I tried push starting it in neutral like you would a manual, apparently autos don't do that ( I really really hate auto trans and I don't know anything about them as a result). Then I turned the car off and started it up again. It drove for about 1/16 of a mile at about 4000 RPMs. I did that about 5 times til I just got home. I do have a quart of trans fluid and I was going to try flushing that, but it doesn't seem as simple as just slipping. Mechanic's Assistant: When was the last time your transmission fluid was checked? Changed? I just bought it. It's a clunker. Maybe never Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Impala yourself? What have you tried so far? I just got home and I was gonna flush the fluid Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the Mechanic to know before I connect you? No that's everything that has happened so far

Howdy from Tennessee, I'm Chris aka Moose. Who am I helping today? I'm glad you've come here to get help. I will do my best to get the answer you are looking for. I help many customers, so sometimes my replies are delayed, I will respond once available. I try to be online at 1-5 pm and 10 pm-5 am every day. - Have you or can you check the trans oil level, color, and odor for any concerns? - While driving were there concerns with warning lights on indicating a transmission issue? - Does the speedometer work correctly?

Speedo works, check [engine](/topics-engine-chevy/) light is on but apparently that's 02 sensors, oil light is on but the level/color are normal. I haven't even been able to check the trans fluid because I'm stuck in an apt complex and they don't like it when I open my hood. The thing that's tripping me out though is the shifting stick that controls the lever. It was impossible to move at first and Is now very looseTrac off light is on

Thanks for those details. Since you are not allowed to work on the vehicle at your home itis going to be best to tow the vehicle to a shop. So far the explanation is pointing to a damaged gear shift cable that is damaged, stretched, or its holding fixtures are loose or damaged at the shifter or transmission. Thank you for seeking us for help, I hope I provided what was needed. Press reply if you need to follow up. If you liked my answer please let me know so I can mark your question complete. Moose

Well done with the cable, Moose! It was disconnected. But the main problem isn't fixed.now he appropriate amount of resistance is bring given at the shifter. But it's like it still thinks it's in park, or really, neutral because it rolls back in reverse but doesn't accelerate.I'm saying it won't accelerate in any gear hopefully I'm making sensevOh and towing and shops are kinda out of the question to be honest man. This is what I can afford. And I can afford to buy parts, if need be.Oh and just throwing this in there: would changing the fluid make a difference? Because that I can do. Im not gonna do a flush but I can empty the pan and replace it...

Your next task is going to be a line pressure test on the transmission to check the pump, valve body, and clutches. Changing the fluid will not help at this point. If the linkage is connected correctly and adjusted correctly, the issue will be an internal failure.

Thank you. So I need to get my money back for this car is what you are sayingBecause I think that at this point, a car that I've owned for less than 24 hours, and drove for about 1 hour, shouldn't need that kind of work done to it. Would you agree?
Automotive Expert
I would agree, it is time for another vehicle. This one is going to need a lot of money to repair.

Yeah thanks moose. You saved me a ton of pointless headache and money bro.
