Q: Car won't start with new battery

asked by on December 12, 2016

My 1997 Suburban, for the past few years, has had trouble starting in the winter. It was an old battery, and this time even a jump start didn't work, so I went out and bought a new battery to replace it. Now the new battery won't start. I tried jump starting the new one too, and same response- the engine turns over, but it just won't start. What is wrong with my car?

This may be related to many different possibilities, some of which may be related to a lack of spark and some of which may be related to a fuel delivery problem or a combination of both. For example, if the ignition coils, crankshaft position sensor, spark plugs, spark plug wires or ignition module are faulty, this may cause the motor to not produce the spark needed to ignite the fuel in the motor.

In the case of a fuel delivery problem, this may be related to low fuel pressure, faulty or dirty fuel injectors, a faulty or dirty idle air control valve (this relays information about air intake to the computer which makes fuel adjustments), or potentially a faulty fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump. Fuel delivery problems will typically not allow the proper amount of fuel to be delivered to the cylinders which results in a lean fuel condition which can cause backfiring or simply cause the motor not to start as a result of fuel starvation. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to diagnose your no start problem.

Toyota (https://www.yourmechanic.com/scheduled-maintenance/toyota-tacoma/) is the most dependable. I remember seeing a '99 Tacoma with a 4-cylinder engine and standard transmission. It had 800,000 miles on it and it was still running pretty good. They make solid trucks. There is no arguing...

Hello, thanks for writing in. Of course, the timing of the transmission breakdown you experienced and the impact you are describing is too coincidental to be unrelated. What other gaskets will I need to replace the intake manifold gasket? 1997 Ford Mustang V6
Hello - the intake manifold on this engine has an upper and lower section. The first thing to check for in a case like this is air leaks. Any air that gets into the engine without going through proper channels will lean out the system and cause problems like this. Look under the hood...
