Q: Car won't start

asked by on January 14, 2018

I have a 2008 Volvo XC90. It wouldn't start so we had AAA jump it. When they jump started it immediately we were able to start the car. We brought it to a garage and they "think" it is the starter. We wanted a second opinion. Brought it home and had to have AAA come out again. Immediately started upon jump starting it. When the car won't start we turn the key and there is a couple of clicking sounds. All lights come on, radio etc. it just won't start. Brought it in for a second opinion and again they "think" it's the starter. The battery is new and is testing fine. I don't want to pay for a starter and then find out it's not the problem. If it's the starter why does the car start up immediately with a jumpstart? I'm so confused. Thoughts? Thank you in advsnce.

My car has 135000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Car is hard to start Inspection $94.99 - $114.99 Get a Quote

Hi Denise. Thanks for contacting us today. Typically, when you turn the key and get the clicking sound, it’s due to one of three possible issues. Either the battery does not have enough cranking amps or cables are loose, an electrical relay is damaged or loose, or the starter itself is not able to engage. If the car starts while receiving a "jumpstart", then the starter mechanically is not the issue, as a failed starter would not work with additional power. This leaves the battery and battery cables or electrical relays as possible sources. If you’d like to have one of our professional mobile mechanics come to your location to complete an on-site inspection, we’d be happy to assist.
