Q: Brakes starting locking up, had car in shop a week, flushed system, replaced rear calipers, master cylinder, and the shop cannot fix the problem.

asked by on March 02, 2017

Car started locking up on brakes, pedal gets stiff and car will barely move due to brake pressure, replaced master cylinder and worked fine, replaced driver rear rotor and pads, started acting up after. shop said it was bad caliper, replaced both rear calipers and issue remains, shop flushed system and issue still remains. Advised shop to look into ABS Module or Master Cylinder. Would that be correct thinking?

My car has 220000 miles.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Check the combination valve on the brake system and see if it is squirting out brake fluid on the line on the return side when loosing the line. Then check the brakes and see if they relaxed. If it does, then there could be an issue with the ABS controller. If the fluid does not come out, then the combination valve needs replaced. If you need further assistance with your brakes not releasing, then seek out a professional, such as one from Your Mechanic, to help you.

Acceleration and driving causes grinding sound.
Hello, the most common problem for a loud grinding noise is in the wheel bearings. I would have a qualified technician, come and inspect the noise and replace the wheel bearings (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/wheel-bearings-replacement) if needed.
My car will not start without a jump
This sounds like your alternator (https://www.yourmechanic.com/services/alternator-replacement) is going out. It maybe outputting just enough power to allow the car to run once you get it started, but it isn't putting out enough power to recharge your battery. Either way, you...
Is there a constant 12-volt source from the fuse board under the glove compartment?
It does not appear that there is a fuse for the horn located in the interior fuse panel. I would probe the ignition and accessory power fuses to see if they are a constant 12-volt source. If one of them...

Hello - if you believe there is "trash" in the fuel system (https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-can-i-keep-my-fuel-system-clean), I would do a "back-to-front" cleaning. Make sure the tank is flushed of debris and old gas, replace the fuel filter, flush fuel lines to the carb/injection....
Hello, Dave I have a 2006 mercury mariner it just started as of last week releasing thick smoke from the exhaust I'm no profession
The head gaskets along with the cylinder heads may be cracked if you overheated the engine bad. The costs will vary depending on the problems found after the heads are removed.
Three warning lights are on - the check engine, battery, and immobilizer, and my car won't start.
The theft light being on will cause the no start. If you have a second key then you need to try it to see if it starts? If not then disconnect the battery for ten minutes with key out of...
2001 camaro what other engine will fit?
Hi Phil. Thanks for contacting us tonight. Unfortunately, with today's modern technology including ECU's and tight engine compartment - swapping different size engines is virtually impossible without some major fabrication. Plus, any different engine combination would require a new transmission,...
After a fuel injector/throttle body cleaning, my Idle goes up and down constantly in park. When in gear it doesnt.
Hi DeShon. Thanks for contacting us today. Usually, when a mechanic cleans a throttle body and fuel injectors with a chemical additive, it's seafoam; which can be rather harsh on sensors and other fuel system components. This is often the...
