The Best Used Cars to Buy If You're a General Contractor

If you're a general contractor, you probably aren’t in the market for a used car. More likely, you’re looking for a pickup truck, because you need to haul equipment and supplies to various job sites. Most contractors will likely be looking for a full-size used pickup, but if you’re more focused on small jobs, you might be able to get by with something smaller.

Our choices in the full-size category are the Ford F-150, the Chevy Silverado, and the Dodge Ram 1500. For smaller trucks, we recommend the Toyota Tacoma or the Nissan Frontier.

  • Ford F-150: For decades, the F-150 has been at or near the top of the “best in class” lists, and with good reason. Available in either V6 or V8, with standard rear-wheel drive or 4x4, this is a powerful truck. It also serves well as a “daily drive,” with a comfortable interior and plenty of available options.

  • Chevrolet Silverado: This is another reliable, solid vehicle that also offers a fair bit of comfort for those who spend a lot of time going from job to job. Chevy hasn’t made many changes to the Silverado over the years, mainly because their customers have always been satisfied. Like the F-150, it is available in V6 or V8, and also with four wheel drive.

  • Dodge Ram 1500: If you need to tow a trailer behind your truck, the Ram can handle 5 tons. The V8 engine delivers all the power you need, and you’ll appreciate the smooth ride and ergonomic seats. For most contractors, their truck serves as their office a good bit of the time, and this is a very nice mobile office to occupy.

  • Toyota Tacoma: This truck is perfect for light towing and hauling. Unless you buy the X-runner, you can benefit from a nice, smooth ride in either rear-wheel drive or 4x4 – the X-runner is not available in 4x4. The Tacoma has a very comfortable cabin as well.

  • Nissan Frontier: The Frontier is another great truck if you’re looking for something fairly small. Like the Tacoma, it can handle light hauling and towing, and is available in rear-wheel drive or 4x4. If you’re a “small job” sort of contractor, it could be just right for you.

If you need a bit more space for your gear, you can always add a trailer.
