P3485 code definition

P3485 is the universal code for Cylinder 11 Exhaust Valve Ctrl Circuit/Open, denoting a problem detected in cylinder 11. Other cylinder exhaust valve codes may be present as well.

What the P3485 code means

Engine cylinders typically have either two or four valves each – intake valves bring fuel to the engine, while exhaust valves carry fuel vapors away. The timing of these valves opening and closing is closely controlled and monitored by the computer’s engine, either a PCM (powertrain control module) or ECM (engine control module).

The computer receives messages from the valves, in the form of voltage signals. When cylinder 11’s exhaust valve control circuit sends a signal outside of the expected parameters, the vehicle will set code P3485.

What causes the P3485 code?

A number of conditions may cause this DTC to set:

  • A bad cylinder 11 exhaust valve control solenoid
  • A loose connection in the circuitry
  • An open or short in the solenoid wiring
  • Clogs or dirt in the oil passages
  • A maladjusted timing chain or belt
  • A camshaft actuator fault
  • Compromised oil pressure as the result of low oil levels

While it is possible that any DTC could be a side effect of a faulty PCM or ECM, this is a rare occurrence. The cause is most frequently related to things like wiring or solenoid issues.

What are the symptoms of the P3485 code?

The Check Engine or Service Engine Soon Light typically illuminates. Other symptoms may include decreased fuel economy and sluggish acceleration. If your vehicle has variable valve timing (VVT), a mechanism which alters the timing of the valves opening in order to increase performance and decrease emissions, this function will probably be disabled as long as the code persists.

How does a mechanic diagnose the P3485 code?

The diagnostic procedure for this code may include:

  • Recording freeze frame data using a scanner, and checking for other stored codes
  • Clearing all codes, followed by road testing the vehicle to see if they return
  • Diagnosing and repairing any other events which occurred before P3485
  • Visually inspecting the exhaust valve control circuitry for corroded wires or loose or damaged connectors
  • Testing the resistance and voltage in the exhaust valve control solenoid and sensor

How serious is the P3485 code?

The vehicle will typically still operate when this code is stored, however engine performance may be affected. If you experienced compromised power or acceleration, this could cause a dangerous situation while driving. The best choice is to have the problem assessed and repaired by a qualified technician as soon as possible. This will help to not only prevent hazardous events while driving, but also to curtail any potential damage to other parts of the engine.

What repairs can fix the P3485 code?
