When the P3414 code is stored by your vehicle’s PCM, it means there is a problem with the exhaust valve in cylinder number two.

What the P3414 code means

Your transmission works because of a number of components, some of which actually move as you drive. One example of this is the cylinders. Inside of your cylinders, pistons move up and down to condense air and cause detonation of the fuel, which is how your engine creates power. The valves on these cylinders are responsible for opening at just the right time to let fuel and air in and let exhaust out.

The PCM is constantly monitoring the performance of the valves, given how integral their role is in the operation of the transmission. If it senses something is wrong, it will store the P3414 code. Given how intricate the operation of your engine is, other codes may get stored at the same time as there could be simultaneous problems occurring too.

What causes the P3414 code?

There could be a number of factors behind the P3414 code being stored by the PCM. As we just touched on, it could be other problems with the engine that eventually feed to a problem with the valve in cylinder two.

However, specific to the valve, the main reasons are:

• The gas cap could simply be cracked or just loose
• A malfunction with the O2 sensor heater circuit
• An issue with the camshaft’s timing

What are the symptoms of the P3414 code?

If the P314 code has been stored, the problem causing it will most likely make problems for your transmission too. Therefore, the symptoms caused by it will make it difficult to drive your vehicle as normal. You’ll probably notice your engine hesitating a bit when you try to accelerate. It may have trouble with acceleration altogether.

Your vehicle may also stall out too when you’re traveling at low RPMs. If you’re idle, the issue with the exhaust valve in cylinder two could cause a rattling noise or the car to vibrate a bit.

How does a mechanic diagnose the P3414 code?

Your mechanic will use an OBD-II scanner to find out all the codes your vehicle’s PCM has stored. Most likely, their next step will be to pop the hood and check your transmission for signs that the valve has been damaged or the reason it isn’t working properly.

Depending on how many codes were stored, your mechanic will need to reset the system enough times to ensure they’ve all cleared for good after a test drive.

Like we mentioned earlier, there can be a number of issues that contribute to P3414 being stored, so it’s important they all get attention. Some mechanics will stop when they think they’ve found the one and only problem, leaving the others.

It might not become the type of issue that puts your life in danger, but it will definitely hinder your ability to get around. You’ll find it extremely inconvenient to try driving your vehicle if it won’t accelerate properly or stalls out constantly.

Your mechanic will have to do one of the following:

• Replace the whole exhaust valve
• Repair the valve train
• Rebuild/Replace the transmission (this is only if the problem is widespread)
• Replace a faulty PCM (this is incredibly rare)
